Now I'm living back in london, I haven't had any large trips of late other than travelling back and forth between York and King's Cross which despite it being what i find a boring journey until you reach south of Stevenage, is great for 91 haulage before they go.

Before the Football
The day started off from my home in Whitechapel where having gotten up at 6, I decided to plan the day ahead knowing I had to be at Loftus Road by 7pm to see my team (Newcastle United) take on QPR. This plan involved starting off at Whitechapel Over/Underground station and taking in Clapham Jcn, Waterloo East, London Bridge and more. Whilst I was back at home over summer, GatEx 387/2's had been introduced and 700's were now in regular service so seeing some of these for site was top priority.

As usual with my plans, i didn't follow it at all and instead headed for Bethnal Green station. Just a 3 minute walk away, it gave me plenty of time to get my gear packed before I left and leaving at 7:30 I was quickly at the station. The sun was just starting to rise and there was not a cloud in sight, the blistering temperatures forecasted by the Met Office looked like they were going to be true. I decided to stop here until 8:30 and in this time managed my last 315 for sight and all except 1 Greater Anglia 321 I needed for sight. Winner winner chicken dinner.

315802 was the packed commuter train which was going to take me to Liverpool Street but I managed to get on at the front set of doors to allow quick disembarkation at the terminus station. It was not Liverpool Street I used however, I decided to take the 10 minute walk to Bank and down the unique travelator to the Waterloo and City line platofrm. Masses of commuters exited the Bank bound trains but I had a carriage to myself to Waterloo, how many can say that on the Underground at 9am in the morning?

Exiting at Waterloo I headed for the next 455 to Clapham Junction and stayed there until 11. A Colas 70 (70802) passed through during this time as well as 2x73's on test trains. However, I was too busy trying to catch the 387/2's and cleared more than half the fleet for sight but my last SWT EMU for sight (455717) was nowhere to be seen. How I have spent so many hours at Clapham Junction without seeing it I will never know.

At 11 I deiced to get a train back to Waterloo and walk along the South Bank to Blackfriars. 458505, my first 458/5 for haulage took me back to Waterloo and I was very impressed with the upgrades these have had, they felt clean and spacious. Walking by the River Thames along to Blackfriars, I checked realtimetrains to see where the 700's were (I printed off the 700 diagrams in the morning). Rather predictably, the Thameslink line was at a standstill due to trespassers and signalling problems in the "core". I spent 30 minutes at Blackfriars seeing a total of 2 trains in that time before I gave up. The views from here over the River are outstanding so I was in no hurry to leave. Just as I was leaving, I took one look back along the platform and 700104 was coming round the corner forming a Bedford - Brighton service running extremely late. 1 down for sight, 114 more to go!

Walking past the Globe and Southwark Cathedral, I headed to London bridge, a station which had changed vastly since I was last here, each platform had security guards on the end of the platforms at the south end and I couldn't be bothered with any hassle so got on 376002 to Waterloo East. The Southeastern fleet is the worst for sight according to my books, probably as it is a line I have seldom travelled on so an hour here at least increased those numbers before I headed for Paddington. Unfortunately this involves travelling on the Bakerloo line train. Compared to the S7's which I use daily, these are so stuffy and worn out and definitely look like they have been running up and down for the last 45 years. According to the ever reliable Wikipedia, these will be running until the 2030's. Great.

My last call for the day was paddington although I would be travelling back here later. The sun which had shined constantly through the day had disappeared behind black clouds as i took cover under the canopy at Royal Oak station. I was there for 5 minutes when i realised no trains had been though, walking up to street level, I couldn't leave the station as police tape was running across the station building and no trains were running on the GWML or Underground. A man on the bridge was threatening to jump off, the few of us on the station were let out underneath the police tape to continue our journeys on alternative transport. I decided to walk to Paddington. The delays meant that the train i wanted to see (43002 in BR125 livery) was cancelled at Reading. Moire importantly though, the man survived the ordeal.

It was now 4 so I decided to head home and get a shower before leaving for the football later that evening. This meant going from West to East London, to go back West again shortly after but I didn't want to take my camera equipment to the match. At Edgware Road, I caught a Hammersmith and City line S7 back to Whitechapel, got a shower, got changed and headed back to Whitechapel station, on another H&C S7, back past Paddington and on to Wood Lane, a short walk from Loftus Road.

We won 6-0. 6. I'm not used to seeing Newcastle away in London and winning (Newcastle London away record before this match: 10 matches, 44 conceded W:0 D:0 L:10) A great end to a great day and the best I have ever seen us play. After the match I had 2 options, another trip on the H&C to Whitechapel or Central Line to Liverpool Street and Overground back from there. White City was the first station I came to so the Central Line it was and the always squeaky 1992 stock and 315802 (my first train of the day 14 hours earlier) and last train of the day got me home by 11.

Congrats on seeing your last 315 and penultimate GA 321! Strangely, 455717 is one of the few 455s that I've had for haulage, even if it was only Vauxhall-Waterloo. Shame about the problems on Thameslink and GWR but you seem to have pulled a great day out of it anyway!

Quite the successful day around London, except for the incident at Royal Oak.

It took me until late August this year to finish the Southeastern fleet for sight, and I started that mission over 12 years previously! I'm still working on clearing SWT, this will be the second time with many renumberings and new additions since I got my last SWT 455 for sight years back. So I wouldn't worry about needing a lot!

Cancellation Advantage

Today I was visiting Eastleigh FC to see York play and having managed to grab £3.30 singles to Southampton Central and back, I headed off from Whitechapel to Victoria. As I got down to platform level, a D Stock unit had just left and although I used to avoid these, the fact they're days are numbering means I have been trying to get as many miles on them as I can. Letting a H&C line train go, a S7 arrived bound for Ealing Broadway. In 25 minutes time, I arrived at Victoria after a very slow run after letting a Circle Line train go ahead of us at Aldgate Junction.

A check of RTT showed me most of the Victoria to Southampton trains that day had been cancelled but mine was down as running so afte grabbing lunch at the Mc Donalds I headed off to Platform 18 and boarded 377101, the front unit of a 12 car train. The journey was uneventful and was lightly loaded. I had only ever done this line to Crawley before so it was nice to get some new line in. After the train split at Horsham we passed the town of Arundel which looked beautiful from the train (I will definitely go here one day). Rain had been constant all the way and we arrived at Southampton around 2L.

I had bought a ticket from Southmapton Central to Airport Parkway on the train and after many problems on the Waterloo South Western line, trains were at a standstill. 444025 which was forming the 13:55 had no crew available so I reluctantly boarded a Voyager for the quick hop to the Airport Parkway.

After the 1-1 draw (means I have seen York win 2 in 31 now!) I headed off to Southampton Airport Parkway once more where problems were still being had. On board 158886 back to Southampton Central, I had another check of RTT which showed that the 19:09 I was booked on to Victoria was running but the inbound had been stood at Horsham for 20+ minutes. With an hour to spare, I found a fish shop near the station where another check of RTT confirmed what I expected, the train had been cancelled.

Southern said no ticket acceptance was in place and I would have to wait for the 20:11. A check of RTT told me this was cancelled. Surprise surprise. No Waterloo trains were running either.

The woman at the ticket office told me SOuthern was wrong anyway and my ticket would be accepted what ever journey was feasible to get me back to Victoria. I headed to Basingstoke via the 18:20 to Manchester Piccadilly. I thought I had seen the end of Voyagers on this trip! Fortunately the train was very quiet and most alighted at Basingstoke to catch London trains. Here I had 2 choices, a 158/159 or a 450. I took the 450 and boarded 450077 to Clapham Junction on the Basingstoke stopper. The 158/159 would have been quicker but also busier and the 450 became my 4th different class of train for the day. I was the only one in the carriage until Woking and we was soon on the way to Clapham.

Here it would have been quicker for me to get the Overground back to Whitechapel but I boarded 377425 to Victoria then was back in Whitechapel for 8:35. If the 19:09 had run, I would have been back about 10:30 so the train being cancelled saved me a couple of hours and for just £3.30 was much cheaper than the £15 if I had originally planned to come this way. Winner winner chicken dinner!

Good news on being allowed to travel back via Basingstoke, it doesn't really surprise me that the stopper from Basingstoke was quiet on a Saturday evening

Strike Week

In a week where the Tubes had been on strike, today (11th Jan) only Southern was on strike and as I had no intention on travelling on them. The day started off leaving the house at 8:30 am and I was standing on Bethnal Green station 2 minutes later for the 8:33 as far as Hackney Wick formed of 315803. Despite living near Bethnal Green station for the best part of 4 months it is the first time I have headed East instead of the short hop to Liverpool Street. The ride went smoothly and after grabbing a photo or 2 I walked along the bridge to Hackney Central where 378215 would take me as far as Stratford.

I had no plans for today at all and I was contemplating what to do next, Central Line into the city, High Speed to King's Cross? Instead I boarded a 321 on a Braintree - Liverpool Street service and boarded a packed S7 as far as Farringdon. King's Cross being a close second, Farringdon is my favourite station in Central London and travelling through here on a near daily basis I never get bored of it. I boarded my first 700 for a long while, 700005 as far as Kentish Town. Still smelling new, I was the only one in my carriage after St Pancras. After spending some time grabbing shots of required 700's here, I boarded a Northern Line service to Euston (Bank Branch). No locos were here today so I travelled down to Vauxhall via the Victoria Line. The station offers great views of trains coming out of Waterloo with the Houses of Parliament offering a great back drop but it was not long until a 455 whisked me off to Waterloo and I walked across to Waterloo East which has great photo opportunities with the London Eye this time acting as the background.

Southwark Jubilee Line station was quickly reached and this time I headed to Baker Street. The Circle/H&C lines were suffering from delays due to signalling problems at Edgware Road and a long wait of 6 minutes (in Underground terms) was had until a H&C S7 arrived. The driver announced on arrival at Edgware Road it was becoming a District Line service to Wimbledon then a Circle Line via High Street Ken but another S7 was not far behind.

After travelling the one stop to Paddington, I was surprised to see 387137 and 378135 awaiting departure with the 14:45 to Hayes and Harlington..... of course, these were now running during off peak so I boarded my first GWR 387. These were fantastic inside, clean and light and I had a carriage to myself the one stop to Acton Main Line passing 800004 at North Pole.

After 30 minutes of spotting here I boarded 378132 and 133 to Ealing Broadway once again having a carriage to myself. A 59 and a few 66's passed through before I boarded a D Stock back home to Whitechapel for maybe that final time on such a long train. It was a lovely trip just before the rush hour crowds arrived.

Journey = Bethnal Green-Hackney Downs-Hackney Central(walk)-Stratford-London Liverpool Street-Farringdon-Kentish Town-Euston-Vauxhall-Waterloo-Waterloo East (walk)-Southwark(walk)-Baker Street-Paddington-Acton Main Line-Ealing Broadway-Whitechapel

Wow you do live close by if you can leave home at 0830 and be on the platform at 0833!

Certainly a good spin around the place, although I'll disagree on Farringdon. Paddington is where it's at!

Really need to get down there and do those 387s!

I agree with you on the 387s. They are quite nice inside and the hard seats don't bother me at all like it does some people! Good little trip.

What a Birthday.......

Saturday gone was my 21st and after a day at football and with friends/family celebrating it was time to head down to London to begin the new Uni year.

Despite many poor journeys on VTEC recently, I decided to travel with them on the 20:30 to Kings X (due in 22:28....). With many journeys with them recently being understaffed, it was no surprise to have no ticket check before 'the incident'

Running on time the train, booked non stop to the capital, braked and we stopped at Grantham station. The train manager announced due to a broken down train ahead we would be stopped here for a shirt while. After around 15 minutes, the doors were opened so people could use the station facilities and stretch their legs. 30 minutes passed before the TM repeated her announcement and we would be stopped longer than expected. With very little staff presence, it was hard to find out info. After checking this site and RTT it was clear the incident was a bit more troublesome than a broken down train. The loco which had broken down had its pantograph broken in the incident and led to major OHLE damage.

We were one of the lucky ones to be stuck at a station and looking at the VTEC twitter page, the lack of staff presence and info being given out was a theme along the trains stuck. 3.5 hours passed before any useful info was given out, that we would have to transfer over the footbridge to a HST travelling to London. At 01:05, the 3 or 4 train loads of people on the packed HST set off to London. The train stopped and the new TM announced we were being held while a posession was carried out ahead. 45 minutes later we were on the move and the TM announced we were approaching P'boro, we were still a good 10 miles away..... we did arrive there eventually and standing passengers had the option to transfer to a 225 on the platform next to us. At 02:10 we set off via Stevenage, arriving at King's Cross just over 300L.

As ezpected, the taxi queues were massive and me and a fellow York fan who was also at the match and sat behind me on the train decided to go to the night tube. For me to get to Bethnal Green, I was going to take the Pic Line to Holborn but with the indicator saying 18 minutes for the next Tube I went for the Victoria to Oxford Circus then the Central line from there. 5.5 hours later than planned I walked into the flat at 04:40 before a nice hours sleep before catching a train to Brighton early the same morning...

A very poorly handled situation by VTEC there. Naturally there will be disruption when something like this happens but its how its handled that matters?

Good grief that must have been an unpleasant situation! I'd have been more than fuming if that had happened to me! I'm also not rushing to try the Piccadilly's Night Tube if waits of 18 minutes or more lie in wait!
