91 names

GNER named the entire fleet, but bloody National Express decided for whatever reason to remove the names. Thankfully, East Coast are (according to wikipedia) listening to "customer requests" (I didn't think the paying public cared about loco names...are EC listening to enthusiasts?) and are beginning to rename the fleet.

Do we know any of the names that are lined up?
Are we finally going to get a 91 named "4472 Flying Scotsman"?

Just to be controversial, how about naming 91s after people who made a big difference to the service/standards of the EC main line?

So how about:-
Sir Nigel Gresley [re-introducing an A4 name]?

or:-
Gerard Fiennes [who had the foresight and persistence to buy Deltics for the line]?

or:-
Christopher Garnett?

Any other suggestions?

Oh come on. I know this is a hobby horse of mine, but these fine engines already have perfectly decent and appropriate names - they simply need the plates put back. At least none of the originals was along the lines of "A.C. Benson, Grantham Chartered Accountant of the Year 2001".
When an engine has been named it should retain that name for life!

I do agree with you. A name is not very well respected if it is changed periodically. There are still plenty of unamed locos to name without drilling more holes in the sides of 91s. My conspiracy theory is that the name plates can be sold for profit and so it looks less cynical if the loco is not just given replacement plates with the same name.

I would not renumber in some cases - why re-number 66s just because they change hands to/from DRS or freightliner ?. I think a subclass can be used to indicate technical dfferences like low-emissions, eth-conversion, gearing or smaller fuel tanks (affects range).

I have had a brainwave. The 70s could become the "leader" class all named after politicians . They are so ugly no-one would object to them being named after politicians would they?. I would not name 70012 though - well not untill a prime-minister falls fowl of the expenses scandall (its been bent you know ).

I always liked the names the Westerns had. Racehorses for Deltics was appealing (I know many where regiments). There could have been more Peaks named after regiments.

But I do like the idea of a class of loco having a consistent set of names that dont change.

I've modified my list of 91 names slightly, mainly naming locos I didn't have names for, thanks to this post I recived in reply when I posted my list before.

Mine was based on the A4s, with some additions and alterations, plus two notable exceptions, I've tried to match with BR numbers where possible.

I would use the new East Coast silver livery as a base, but remove the logos and purple stripe and instead make the upper bodyside a darker silver to match the doors and add a red stripe (as I did here). The darker silver would have gaps in it allowing the base silver to show throw in the shape of the Swallow and INTERCITY logos. I would then take the above suggestion and make the Swallow logo a proper cast Swallow on the locos named 'Swallow' and 'INTERCITY' instead of just being a gap in the darker silver on the other locos. Peter Scott and David Attenborough are there because the INTERCITY 225 is one of the most enviromentally friendly trains we have, all they need now is regenerative braking.

I'll add to that DVT 82219 - 'Duke Of Edinburgh', which should work with 91129 whenever possible.

They're loosing sight of something there. A wrinkly peeled-off piece of vinyl does not have the same attraction as a rigid piece of cast iron at the auction . Youre right though - I think the cast iron/alluminium ones cause corrosion even through a decent layer of paint.

Oh, and in response to the OP. Yes, NatEx did take all the names off, but thats also exactly what GNER did. They took all the names off and gave them different names, and didnt even give them proper nameplates.
Basically they should get the good BR names, and put them back on the original locos. So 91101 should be named Swallow.
Then for the others that arent named, or had poor names, give them some of the good GNER names. I always liked Double Trigger!!
