Our thoughts and sympathies go out to all the families and friends of those ordinary people who lost their lives tragically eight years ago today. What must they have felt on those two aeroplanes not knowing their fate and then to realise what was about to happen - presuming that they did know! I can't imagine what went through the minds of those office workers that looked out of their windows and saw their impending doom in the shape of terrorist manned aircraft. May they all rest in peace.

I'd hazard a guess at glass, office furniture, aviation fuel and a plane fuselage for those in the impact zones.
Seriously, see through my rather poor taste in humour, I'm a decent person and I also feel for all those people waiting for news of brothers, sisters, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, sons, daughters and dear friends who never came home. Like world wars before this, we should never forget the heavy civilian price paid then, and the loss of troops now all in connection to our so called 'War on Terror'

Why do we have this Americanism anyway. It's bleedin' 11/9...

They do everything arse-about-face.

On a serious note, it is a great tragedy for all involved. I would like to pay particular condolence to the Emergency Services on that day, who lost their lives helplessly trying to save others.

It is natural that in the years immediately following such an event, there are commemorations and suchlike. Then, perhaps, 10 years later and so on there will be commemorations. But not each and every year - as monkey said - lots of other people die in the world, not just a few in an office block in America.

Well, it pretty much is, actually. If we all woke up tomorrow and America just ceased to exist, we'd be in pretty big trouble. If we all woke up, and, say, Papua New Guinea ceased to exist, the vast majority of the world wouldn't give a damn.

Also, what's to say other events aren't commemorated as much as 9/11? D-DAY and suchlike are still very much remembered. As for it being 9/11 and not 11/9, well it happened in the US, so go figure. Here when we think of 7/7, we are referring to the 7th day of the 7th month, just as we would in England where it happened.

Simplez...

Pray forgive me posting in this thread with a rather inappropriate username...

There's no doubt that the United states has a marked effect on the World economy, and that's especially true for us Brits.

Our national economy is very strongly tied-in to the American economy, to the point where if the American economy were to fail completely then ours would as well. The recent credit crisis is a very good example of this happening, given that it was all started by American creditors and mortgage lenders handing out loans willy-nilly, without them checking the risk of creditees beforehand and verifying that they'd be able to pay off the loans that had been handed out. :o

Personally - Although I'm a strong advocate of free trade across the World - I reckon that different economies should be kept isolated from other economies wherever possible. In that way, the failure of one country wouldn't have any unavoidable consequenceds for it's friends and neighbours. 8)

9/11 is when the US came of age as regards being a victim of Terrorism, that is also partly the reason why it is held as being such an important date. It is also arguably the date when Political lies and distortions also came of age.

Prior to then in effect the US had never suffered terrorism* as has been known in Europe, although it has been responsible for, supported, and funded many terrorist organisations over the years as it suited them to do so in pursuit of their Foreign Policy goals.

* This ignores "home grown" loonies such as the Uni-Bomber and others of a similar ilk who are not terrorists in the true sense.

Earlier in the week I caught the end of a BBC radio programme which examined a group who argue that the 7/7 bombings were not carried out by those held responsible, and one of the representatives of this group labelled one of the survivors as being mentally ill for getting angry when he denied that 7/7 had happened.

Such people really do astound me with their absolute confidence to argue against fact. No doubt he is also one of the Flat Earth believers as well :roll::roll:

Papua New Guinea? I'm pretty sure it would be headline news in Australia, given we are its 2nd closest neighbor, as well as the fact that we have many humanitarian operations going on there and one of Australia's most famous war sites, possibly 2nd to Gallipoli being the Kokoda trail is there and is a very popular trail for people to do.

But back to the main issue. Its amazing how time flys, I mean 8 years on, I remember it like it happened yesturday when I was back in year 12. I'm very glad that I made a scrap book at the time covering the events that followed as well as keeping several newspapers from the day.

...that is very narrowminded - and is exactly what is wrong with the way people think in thisw world. people in papua new guinea are no less important than americans, just because it is less rich or whatever...

Ooh I remember 9/11 like it was yesterday!
thats because it was
I know...Indeed, 09:11 was only about eleven hours before this post!:lol::razz:

Joking aside though, I meant to say that years seem more like minutes to me. Indeed, it feels like it's only been about five days since Jesus Christ and his retinue were allegedly wandering about...Although that's a thing that I never got the chance to witness first-hand, simply because I havn't been able to enter Israel's baking hot climate for at least 27,700 years now... :|

Whether or not it is narrow minded, it doesn't make it any less true or not. I can't make my point any clearer without jumping up and down, waving my hands, and screaming.

Did I say people in Papua New Guinea are any less important? No. Stop putting words in my mouth, rent a brain, and rethink. Kthx.

...then in that case your post was irrellavant to my original point. I wasn't talking about the economy, I was talking about the importance of human life.

if I was - I'd say it wouldn't matter, the world would probs be better off without a country with minority population leeching majority of worlds resources. the economy would be fine, because the worlds developing nations wouldn't have their production of food or whatever demolished by illegal subsidies - but all that is another matter.

never mind me renting a brain, I'd suggest you develop some empathy and compassion for others around you in the world first...

Hence proving that your reply to MY post was pointless, then. If you weren't talking about the economy, and I was (as I stated) - your post is pointless, and I can only take it as an argumentative jive. IF i wanted to talk about individual people, I would, but I didn't.

Who says I don't have compassion? Compassion doesn't even come into this. I was talking about the economy, and also the implications of, if the USA disappeared, where would things like Microsoft Windows come from, for instance. You **CLEARLY** didn't understand this in my original post about USA/Papua New Guinea (a mere example, again, something that could be understood from the wording), and all of your subsequent posts reflect this.

When that name for the London bombings was coined, i cynically thought that the bombers chose that date for its palindromic value, and to avoid the confusion there had been with the twin towers. Personally, I hate the way these events have been labeled: I don't mind "September the 11th" or "the 11th of September", but "nine-eleven" is a cold, impersonal number to me.

Don't forget that many people are inclined to use short-hand wherever possible. If ye cast thy mind back to the day following the atrocities, the day itself was being discussed so much that newsreaders would've defaulted to using 9/11 as it's much less of a mouthfull than anything containing "September" in it. :)

Also, the date itself in American format - 9/11 - Also happens to be the telephone number for the Emergency Services over there (911) and I have a feeling that Al-Q'ida might've chosen the date for just that reason. Even today, if anyone dials "911" it probabally still reminds them of the atrocities committed on that date.
Assuming this is correct though, it might be worth all of Europe keeping their bleepers peeled around the first of December just in case any terrorist cells are planning a 1/12 (112)...
