How many 87's are there in the UK? How many still run?

There are three 87s in the UK; 87001, 87002 and 87035.
87001 is preserved at NRM York, and 87035 at Crewe Heritage Centre. Neither are operational.
The rest of the 87s have either been scrapped, or exported to Bulgaria.

To me this meets richieb1971's criteria of "the rest of the class are gone and they kept one or two in good condition" or does the fact that there are three make it not preserved?

If we take that definition literally then the Deltics and A4s wouldn't be preserved, as there are more than two of each.

This is a really silly conversation. The loco is owned by a preservation group whose purpose is to preserve AC locos; it is preserved.

Hopefully going forward the increase in electrified lines will give more opportunities to ACLG for hiring out their operational locos, keeping them up to spec for mainline use is not cheap and is the only way enthusiasts are likely to be able to enjoy seeing them operational in the future.

They may class it as preserved now but if they have them hired out they are working assets I would of thought. In reality it is not us but the owners that can state whether this loco or that is preserved or not, they alone can decide whether they want to class a loco as preserved or not.

The owners are the AC Loco Group.

Bear in mind that Deltics have done freight duties recently. They are most definitely preserved locos.

No, ETL and the ACLG are separate organisations.

87002 has repeatedly been refered to as a "commercial asset of ETL" and not ACLG. The 86/87 appeal from ACLG appears to have come down to all 86 and not 87.

As earlier, I think I'm not desperate to worry about a few miles dragback on diverted sleepers. I keep telling myself anyway!

Our most recent acquisition, 87002 represents the final type of locomotive built specifically for the West Coast Main Line: Class 87. The loco has been acquired for preservation with the kind co-operation of the Bulgarian Railway Company and Porterbrook Leasing, and is full working order. It has been fitted with OTMR and is now main line registered, having hauled its first test train on 16th July 2008.

The AC Loco group describes ETL and themselves.

We are a locomotive preservation group. We do not export AC electric locomotives. We do not build AC electric locomotives. We do not own any companies that do! We have no structural connections with any companies that do.

We do have an associated company, Electric Traction Ltd that hires AC electric locomotives in the UK.

If you are looking for details of exports, you need to contact the companies that do this kind of work.

Essentially ETL is there to hire the preserved mainline registered locos, one would assume to help raise funds to restore the other locos in their collection.

Preserved because it would be working charters rather than day-to-day regular services.
