Can anyone tell me what 87002 is actually used for other than icebreaker trains? It's mainline certified; does it ever get used for charters or freight?

If it were diesel it would be preserved.

I think its a case of it being electric, no preservation lines having OHLE and the fact that it works well and is the only one left.

It will do whatever it can to survive on our rails. Which isn't much. What we need is more lines to be electrified and it uses will obviously be encouraged elsewhere outside of the WCML.

I have a special interest in 87002 as it powered the VIP train which inaugurated electric haulage from/to Preston, driven by my late father. My understanding is that it is, definitely, owned by a preservation group but it's difficult to keep the finances stacked up (little appeal as a guest loco on the Severn Valley :)).

However, I thought I'd seen a suggestion that it might find regular use hauling the Sleeper ECS Wembley - Euston and return under Serco. Or did I dream that ... ?

Maybe we differ on what preservation actually means then.

87002 is owned and preserved by the AC Locomotive Group. If it wasn't preserved, it wouldn't be here any longer.

I consider preserved as not being able to run on the main line.

It is able to run on the main line though! From what I'm hearing, it may be seeing quite regular use in a few month's time...

Where will it be running then? Will definitely need to get that in!

Only chance seems to be for a mile or two dragback from April if the sleepers are diverted East Coast and you don't get bowled and canned out...a bit desperate even for me given high stakes of needing to book blind on the right train.

Last public declaration n it was a "commercial asset of ETL" ie not preserved by usual terms

IMO, preserved means something that has been withdrawn from use, purchased, and restored/maintained by a group set up with the intention of 'preservation'. If it weren't preserved, it would have been scrapped.

As ETL is wholly owned by the AC Loco Group, who are committed to the preservation of AC Locomotives... I would still call it preserved. All main preserved locos are commercial assets in that respect.

Does 87002 have a yellow plate and a 9xxxxx series number like main-line certified steam locos do, or is it still running officially as 87002?

Runs officially as 87002 and it is preserved, but mainline registered.

Any revenue generated once exams, rent and other unexpected expenditures are taken into account goes towards the restoration and upkeep off the preserved 81,82,83,85 & 89 and not back to the share holders off ETL.

I consider preserved as not being able to run on the main line.

Do you class the 40145, D1015, various Detics and 50's that have run on the main line over the years not preserved then ?

Had to read this several times . So no steam specials are run using preserved locos, Heritage specials using Western, Deltic, class 40 etc are "not using preserved locos". What about the NYMR extension to Whitby is this not using preserved locos and stock

86 101 has been doing driver training runs in and out of euston last week, so yes I think this is happening

87002 is just an exhibition piece without a power cable. I thought it maintained mainline registration due to the fact. Its just a shame that nobody can find it anything better to do. It needs to do 100mph runs like it once did hauling a rake of suitable carriages.

Once the network gets more electrified its uses will become apparent.. knowing the British railway industry it will probably be confined to a siding until then.

The point of the steam locos having a 9xxxxx number is to give them a TOPS number, obviously a class 87 already has one. Or am I missing something?

According to Wikipedia, preserved diesel and electric locos follow a similar pattern but take a number in the 89xxx series even if they also carry their previous TOPS number. Unfortunately the list given is from 2006, and on a quick skim only includes diesels.

89400 (E27000) is an electric loco (Class 77).

There is a list included in the annual Rail Guide book, the latest copy I have is from 2013, as it includes the following electric locos.

89400 - E27000 (Class 77)
89403 - 71001
89503 - 81002
89535 - 83012
89561 - 85101

I'm assuming 86101 and 87002 haven't been allocated 89xxx numbers because they've remained on TOPS (whereas other locos upon preservation would be deleted off TOPS).

Thanks for this. I think it is also true that none of the electric locos you list is permitted to operate under its own power on Network Rail. If so this would be another distinguishing feature of 86101 and 87002.

Since being numbered in the 89xxx series is one definition of being preserved, by this definition the two AC loco aren't officially preserved, though clearly the intention of the owners is to preserve them in heritage condition. All part of the grey area between preservation and main line operation!

I consider preserved as not being able to run on the main line.

That's not what preserved means. Preserved means someone has bought it with the intention of... well, preserving it for the future. Hence ''preserved''. Main line certification is like an extra achievement for preservationists on top of saving and restoring something.

By your logic, preserved buses that can run on roads aren't preserved. Or preserved aircraft that can fly.

Preserved to me means the rest of the class are gone and they kept one or two in good condition.

87002 is simply an electrified loco kept on mainline rails due to "so called" shortages of traction.
