86101 + hull trains

Hull Trains will initially be using 86101 and a 47/x with C-RAIL Mk2 and Mk3a coaches between Monday and Friday, for the first few months
It is hoped that from early January, for a further four months, the set will only be required on Saturdays and Sundays

Love the photo, could so easily have been shot in the 70s or 80s, although I can spot 2, possibly 3 things that show it wasn't, actually, make that 4 (just as a clue, 2, including the possible one, are on the loco, 2 are infrastructure related).

I'll guess with hi-intensity headlight, fire system pod (on roof), rake of stock, and 'extra' poles attached to top of original OHL structure, other infrastructure one possibly the fence by the lineside cabinet?

The entire WCML had OHLE and 2, 3, or 4 aspect signalling by the 1970s/1980s
The split tower on catenary poles, like that nearest the camera, is indicitive of the section between Carlisle and Penrith
The loco originally had non-flexicoil suspension, and bogies the same as the rest of the Class 86s
On conversion to Class 86/1 these were replaced with bogies the same as found on Class 87s

The ones I was going on were the fire supression system and the RCH cables on the loco (wasn't sure if they were fitted on any blue 86s, but I don't think so). Infrastructure I was thinking of, was the modern style signal (subtle differences from an earlier 4 aspect colour light), and the safe cess path on the right hand side. Wasn't sure about the headlight, couldn't remember when they were fitted. Didn't notice the extra poles for the return conductor on the OHLE (and I did look at the OHLE for any changes). Suppose one we havn't got, that relates to having RCH jumpers, is that it doesn't have the original multiple control jumpers.
Just one other really subtle one I've now seen, if you look closely you can just make out the rails are fixed with modern style clips, not the older style pandrol clips common in the 70s and 80s.

Any idea what formation they are going to use. Both shots have 5 Mk3s, FO-RFB-3xSO, but the first has something on the back aswell, I presume a Mk2BSO. I presume they will be using a DVT though to make life a lot easier at Kings Cross, since IIRC there is no run around facility there. I don't think there ever was actually, since even before HSTs locos were released by another loco either working the next northwards service, or taking the stock to Hornsey. Oviously neither of these would be likely, since there is only one loco available, unless they hire in another diesel to take the whole lot up to Hornsey/Bounds Green for 86101 to run around.
Still, 5 Mk3s and a DVT is going to go nicely, afterall these locos are designed for hauling 8 or 9 Mk3s with a DVT at 110mph and do that pretty lively, so 5 and a DVT will be easy.

It was reported on wnxx.com yesterday that FCC are also giving cosideration to use stock and 86's from london to p/boro and cambridge(via hitchin) to alleviate overcrowding at peak times.

It would otherwise be demand for Mk2d/e/f coaches, but since there are loads of "spare" Mark 3a/b/c coaches, why not!

The HST fleet has always been trim, with so many sets with just enough spares
With GNER adding a ninth vehicle to their sets, that has reduced the number of available Mark 3 coaches, as some have been converted from within the HST fleet
A small number of Class 43 power cars have also been withdrawn and disposed of

When you say that a small number of power cars scrapped it really is small. Only 3 production power cars so far all due to accident damage.

AFAIK, the plan is to use the 86 and Cargo D stock between London and Doncaster, and the 170 or 222 between Doncaster and Hull. Unless something has been changed this afternoon, then that will happen (eventually).
