8 In 15 Rover where train doesn’t stop

i will have an 8 in 15 day west of england rover ticket am I right in saying that I only need a ticket to Westbury from London but can travel through to Penzance even though the train doen'

You are correct. If you are using a West of England rover and a ticket from Westbury to London, then the train need not call at Westbury for your combination to be valid (this is in the National Rail Conditions of Travel, condition 14.2).

Thank you for the above. just one thing how do i obtain a seat reservations o n a train that doesn't stop there, we will be travelling to penzance.
Would it be best to buy tickets at station in advance and all at once, don't think I can do it online. thanks for any help>

For reservations with a Rover/Season product, visit a ticket office, or contact the relevant company via Twitter or phone.

In this case it would be a reservation from Penzance to London with GWR.

However at the moment I think GWR are only issuing counted places, so you won't get an allocated seat. But you can take your pick at Penzance!

If this is the case for your intended service, some TMs may suggest it's not a valid combination. It may avoid potential conflict if you buy a ticket from the last station whose platforms are passed through, i.e. likely Bruton (as Frome also has an avoiding loop). That shouldn't cost much more.

Out of curiosity, presumably if the train was scheduled to pass through Westbury, but for operational reasons had to divert via the avoiding loop (e.g signal failure), then would the Westbury - Penzanze ticket would be fine?

Yes. A London-Westbury ticket is valid via Frome or Bruton if you catch a train from London which doesn't go through Westbury,

There are permitted routes on a map which say you may catch a train, or trains, which go from (for example) Newbury to Westbury. The map don't say exactly which way you need to travel between them, so any of those routes would be valid.

Rather like the 16:45 Liverpool to Norwich many years ago. It was non stop Stockport to Derby.

A Coast and Peaks Roger was valid at both Stockport and Derby, how was anyone supposed to know it didn’t go via Stoke!
