8 DBS Class 66's

Hello all

Waiting for my train today in Bridgend and 8 DBS class 66's 7 of which still in EWS Colours, came through at quite a conciderable speed. Just thought it was an unusual formation/working. Is this a regular occur acne or a one of. Thing?

I sneakily videod it on my phone as it went through, I will link it in the morning on my way to work but the most I had seen previously was 3/4

nothing out of the ordinary - just the easiest way to move a lot of locos. Line them all up and lash the one with the most fuel left to the front.

Especially on Fridays/Saturdays, this is a normal way of moving locos which have finished their normal week's work to places where they are required for weekend engineering workings.

Similar moves will take -place overnight Sun/Mon to replace them...

Those sort of moves are farely common with DB these days, mostly to move 66s between Eastleigh and Hoo, or Eastleigh to Westbury to South Wales.

I have seen at least 5 class 66's together pass through Bridgend at 03:20 on a monday morning.

Well presumably as each ran dry you could just power up the next one and use the multiple working equipment.
Unpowered vehicles lead powered ones in America all the time.

Yes - the 'train' you saw was 0X12 Margam to Eastleigh,
and as explained above, conveys locos to work Sunday
engineering possession trains.

No need. The other locos will be switched out & be hauled by the lead loco in much the same way as wagons or carriages. No fuel needed.

0X12 runs mosts Saturdays at the moment from Margam to Eastleigh picking up locos at Newport ADJ and dropping locos off at Westbury.

From a local gen group yesterday........

"0X12 currently shows from Margam: 66005, 66063, 66110, 66136, 66152, 66184 and from ADJ: 66095, 66099 to Westbury."

When there are around 5 locos, it runs as 0O12. I think the most that have been in the convoy has been 10 locos.

That formation is so rare it happens most Saturdays to move locos from South Wales to Eastleigh (they might pick up some more locos at Westbury) for Saturday night/Sunday engineering trains, they usually head back early Monday morning.

6 or 7 out of Wales is normal but up to 10 can run when needed if there are no locos to pick up at Westbury.

Conveys had a set maximum at 5, but a few years back they up it to 10.
So the maximum on Network metal is 10, any more and it needs special permission to run. (They moved some class 37s about 13 some years back and got permission to run it.)

I have seen 5 go pass me at Scunthorpe station, the last one was a class 60 on the back of the pack.

The normal maxium still is five locos but certain routes are authorised for a maximum of 10 (the aforementioned Margam to Eastleigh is one and Wembley to Bescot / Whitemoor and Doncaster are others; there are probably more)
