75% staff discount card

Hi all,

Does anyone know what the 75% off rail travel card is all about?

I understand that some TOC's operate this scheme.

Is it just for staff to use for themselves with other TOC's or can rail staff buy their relatives (not immediate family) discounted rail tickets on any service (75%) and if so are you limited to using this to a few times a year?

All info is much appreciated.

Each member of staff (active and retired) has a Privilege Rate card for themselves to use on any part of the National Rail network. They also get one for their partner and one for each of their dependants. Only a card holder can use Priv Rate tickets (just like any Railcard).

There is no limit on how many journeys are made with the discount.

Generally speaking staff get free travel on their own TOCs services, some TOCs have made deals with others and companies with multiple TOCs sometimes allow some travel for free on the other TOC services. Ex-BR (Safe-Guarded) staff also get "boxes" which permit free travel on all TOCs.

Officially the exceptions are the Open Access Operators, who are not deemed to be TOCs on the National Rail network for the purposes of Priv rate travel, but the staff can show discretion.

I think it's a bit rough on NR employees, but s**t happens.

And - to be fair - there have always been inconsistencies in PT facilities.

My mother - who never worked for the railway - gets concession on ferries in Scotland. I get no such concessions, despite having spent 20 years sweating blood for the industry.

I ended up two promotions from a lifetime of 1st Class travel - I know of people who did pretty mundane jobs in the computing section, where grades were inflated for recruitment & retention issues, who enjoy unlimited 1st Class.

C'est la vie.

On the SWT/NR alliance railway, there was talk that SWT would give signallers free travel on SWT services, other NR staff might get it as well but I dont know for sure.

I was chatting to my Aunt and Uncle last month and got a fit of jealousy!
My Aunt gets a large number of free journeys per annum first class (20?)

My Uncle gets as many as his likes.

Imagine that, just walk up Nytime you like and hop on first class on any TOC!

That said they don't get the nibbles but some staff give them to them anyway.

You will not be surprised to hear that my Auntie only learnt to drive in her fifties and my Uncle is nearly eighty and doesn't have a driving licence.

LU staff don't get priv on other TOCs however can get a discounted gold card season ticket for work at 75% off. They do however get free travel on all London Buses so many see this as a more important than priv (especially if they live in London and never/rarely use non-LT trains).

However LOROL get the best of all worlds including PRIV and a free Oystercards for all LT buses & trains, for themselves and a spouse.

NR employees get free travel on SWT services on Wessex route. Sorry, thought it was common knowledge internally.

It might be well known in the actual area but it certainly isn't on our line!

I shall have to remember that next time I'm down at my daughter's in Cornwall as I've always paid to use the train.

SWT's Wessex line runs from Waterloo to Weymouth. Cornwall is a bit too far out. You also probably have to be working for NR as part of the partnership.

FYI You can also get 75% discount on most rover & ranger fares, discounted travel on stenaline (port tax only for foot passengers; 50% for vehicles), and free travel on Croydon Tramlink & Reindeer Lake Cruises in the Lake District.
