American crash-worthiness standards are even more stringent than european ones, yet American trains come out of crashes much better than European ones.

American crashworthyness standards are being changed to be more like European standards. Their ‘rolling bank vaults’ are good for the integrity of the stock, bad for the soft squishy bits that get thrown around inside…

Another thing to consider is that the buffer stop there is designed for use with stock fitted with buffers, which the 745s don't have so the coupler was largely avoided by the buffer stop and went straight into the cab structure. Would a 321 have done any better?

They do have buffers of sort.

Hidden behind the entirely sacrificial fairing are two massive buffer like structures for taking the impact.

It's not gone into the cab structure. There is a lot of nothing between the front of the fairing and the actual structure proper starting

They've also struggled to find builders with designs that will meet them, witness the withdrawal of Nippon Sharyo from the US market after their double decker stock was unable to pass end-loading tests. I think that only Siemens currently have a design that passes.
