Thirty in passenger servuice today. 701042 being the only absentee.

Has 701051 actually done anything yet today? All of its morning peak trains showed up as cancelled on journeycheck plus 2U04 shows as cancelled on RTT.

Train Cancellations
05:57 London Waterloo to Shepperton due 06:52
07:00 Shepperton to London Waterloo due 08:03
08:13 London Waterloo to Strawberry Hill due 08:42

I know that 701051 is allocated to the next train in the diagram 1H90 1801 Strawberry Hill to London Waterloo, but given the scale of disruption this evening I would not like to predict whether it will or will not run.

It appears it did operate 1H90 at least

Of the five 701s that drop out between the peaks, 701051 was the only one of the five that did not work in the morning peak, but ironically in the evening peak 701051 was the only one of the five that did.

Due to starting a new job (which hopefully everyone understands had to take priority), I've lost track of what's happened since the list on the last page almost a month ago.

I see that 701030, 701033 and 701059 have been quoted as entering passenger service. Are there any others and does anyone have any further updates from within the last month?

2C16 0709 Reading to Waterloo is a single 458/5 again today. While reliably 701 before it's only managed once so far since the new timetable began.

That diagram is a Wimbledon returner after the peak so it affects fewer people

No other ones have entered passenger service aside from those three, hopefully some other units are close. Edit: 701010 has been allocated to its first passenger service this evening.

701022 is the only one left at Marchwood (and likely leaves tomorrow) with the other three moving to the "SWR - Not In Passenger Service" group.

So there’s eight 701/0s out of SWR boundary. They’re:

Derby LL (1)

701003

Long Marston (6)
701006
701007
701008
701023
701045
701049

Marchwood (1)
701022

It may affect fewer people over the course of a day but as has been stated in other threads, 2C16 is probably the busiest service of the day on the Reading and short forming it day after day is going to affect the same passengers who will eventually give up on the service all together when they continually can't board.
There are multiple Wimbledon depot to Wimbledon depot morning peak diagrams, it wouldn't be hard to switch it up a bit so that the same line and crucially, same customers aren't always affected.
Today was particularly awful as 2C16, 2U16 and 2S16 were all single 458s with previous trains (2U14 and 1N92 having been cancelled).

Are the other Wimbledon returners mainline side? If so then 458/4s are not route cleared, and you’d have crew traction knowledge issues as well.

Some of them are, but it's a 458/5 or 455 that keeps getting used on 2C16, so these can go via the main side.

There’s obviously a reason those that allocate the stock overnight are choosing that particular diagrams but without having the details it’s impossible to know whether it’s operational convenience (laziness) or whether there’s a more limiting factor like crew traction knowledge etc

Thank you very much @Stephen42 for this, that's perfect.

Here's an updated list since the end of last month. 701010, 701030, 701033, 701052 and 701059 have all entered passenger service with 701052 becoming the latest 701 to do so today. 701022, 701029, 701032 and 701038 have all moved from Marchwood to Wimbledon with 701022 the last to depart today, meaning no 701's are now at Marchwood. As far as I know there haven't been any other changes and this list is accurate.

SWR seem to have concentrated on emptying out Marchwood and the last one 022 left on Tuesday. So lets see what happens in the new year as realistically Long Marston will be the only remaining source of 701/0s (barring one at Derby).

But as for 701/5s there is Bicester with fifteen along with six (iirc ?) at Long Marston !.
Maybe we will see 701/5s come into use before the last of the 701/0s ?.

They were all built a while back. Don't expect to see any in service until the 701/0s are all deployed. According to Modern Railways SWR "have declined to comment on plans for the introduction of the Class 701/5s".

So far it is obvious SWR have prioritised the 701/0s first.

My feeling is the last 701/0s might be more of a struggle to commission and we are getting to the last seven stored out of sixty !.
There are about twenty 701/0s on SWR in the process of commissioning or used for training.

Also at some point (well soon) the 701/5s (ie 5car) become important as not all daily diagrams can be covered by a 701/0 (10car) all day. Not enough long stabling sidings is why the 701/5s (ie 5car) were ordered in the first place and therefore there are diagrams the 701/0s cannot work. It is all discussed up thread. If you want to look it is quite a long way up thread, but I will repeat the jist of it below (subject to my memory/interpretation !).

Currently these diagrams dictating units shorter than ten cars can be covered by 450s (4car), 458/4s (4car) and 458/5s (5car). Bear in mind the 455s are almost certainly history now. But these 4car units are meant for more mainline work or scrap (458/5s). It would be the demand that existed before Covid and it depends if SWR or GBR want to meet any existing rise in demand and encourage any potential rise in demand. Bear in mind SWR has suffered more than most TOCs from a fall off in commuting (not SWRs fault as it comes down to the demographic of their customers and the nature of their customers work). I also think that the use of 450s has been, since before Covid, stretched requiring disproportionately higher lease charges - but I do not have a source for that.

Last time I looked they required 120 from 127 although two of those diagrams are ghosts, 1 diagram for graffiti and the other is 450104 which is long term out of service.

It looks like for the first time, the services around Hounslow Loop are mostly 701s, there is only one pair of 450s operating, all the rest are 701s: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/gb-nr:HOU/2025-12-31/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=actual

Since the start of the new Dec 2025 timetable, there has only ever been 2 or 3 701s used each day.

Also I wonder why that today mostly 701s have been allocated, whereas the services around the Hounslow Loop on 27, 28, 29 & 30 December were either pairs of 450s and 458/4s. Where have all the 458/4s gone?
