Just need clarification on the 7 day travelcard on the following point:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/1012.aspx

- 7 Day, monthly or longer period National Rail only season tickets.

My travelling companion will be buying the Z1-6 travelcard at Heathrow 123. It is envisaged that we will be doing some NR journeys to SW London from Central London.

Does he need a photocard for it?

Photocards are not required for seven day adult "In Boundary"Travelcards. A Travelcard for Zones 1-6 is classified as being "In Boundary" and thus does not require a photocard for the ticket to be valid.

The FRPP states the following just for clarification on the issue:

FRPP said:
The National Rail Conditions of Carriage (Condition 15) state that certain ticket types are only valid if a Photocard is held. Season Tickets and Travelcard Seasons must be accompanied by an approved Photocard, except for any 7 Day adult 'In boundary' Travelcard or for any Period/Annual Travelcard issued on Oyster. Train Companies recognise documents 'RSP 3588/9' and 'RSP 3588/11 for this purpose.

I think he'll get it issued on Oyster rather than a paper ticket if purchasing from an LUL station.

Hi, a friend passed me a travelcard which is ADULT 07 DAYS TRAVELCARD (zone 1-6, paper ticket). It is still valid for the following two days so I thought I could use it. But I just noticed that on the upper right corner of the card it says "Valid only when shown with photocard no." Is this travelcard different from what you mentioned in your post? It's strange because I don't remember my friend has an accompanying photocard with this travelcard, and I cannot ask him because he has left UK.

Any expert can tell me if I can use this travel card without a photocard? Thanks!

I am pretty sure that weekly tickets do not need a photocard, it probably says that as standard as the template for seasons says it but it's only needed if it's monthly or longer.

As for whether it is transferable or not, that is questionable. Oyster cards are advertised as being transferable I believe, but paper tickets are not. But by not enforcing a photocard to be used they are not effectively preventing it being transferred.

I believe Oyster Cards with "Pay as you go" only are transferable, but not when they are loaded with a travelcard. How this can be enforced I'm not sure! One day paper travelcards are also non-transferrable.

Thanks for all the answers! I'm a new londoner and know very little about so many kinds of tickets! I think it's probably true that it says 'valid only when shown with photocard no.' on the 7 days travelcard as a template of season card - this is pre-printed on the card but the '07 days travelcard' as the ticket type was printed on afterwards (when the ticket was actually sold).

Correct according to the tfl website which states that travelcards are for your use only (or words to that effect). it also states that if an Oyster is loaded with a travelcard it cannot be lent to anyone else. Perhaps it can't be enforced and they are relying on their statements to stop people doing this? Or could there be a way to check if you are stopped by RPI's or the LUL equivalent?

IIRC you need to register to have season ticket on your Oyster, therefore they will have your details. I'm not sure if there was an exception for this for a 7 day, though.

I used to have a 7-day regularly on my Oyster which wasn't registered, but had to register it when I wanted to get a 6-month on it.

You cannot use this ticket as it is not transferrable. However, the space for the photocard number to be entered is there as the same ticket stock would be used if it were an 'out-boundary' Travelcard i.e. a Travelcard valid from a station outside Zone 6.

I think the non-transferability is supposed to stop 2 people from sharing the same ticket for the same journey at the same time or from using someone else's season ticket and photocard.

If it's an in-boundary weekly season, or another single or return ticket type, you can transfer it as there's no way to prove that a transfer's happened.

Legally, the phrase non-transferable means exactly that. It doesn't mean 'if I don't think they'll catch me'!

In practice, the chances of being caught are very low, unless there's some reason for RP to think fraud is being committed.

On LU, single/day tickets have colour coding to indicate which part of London the ticket was issued in - I've seen a couple of people caught out by this.

So you're saying that I can't buy a ticket for someone else to use...?

You can. A ticket is bought for the person who is travelling - it doesn't necessarily have to be bought by the person who is travelling. It cannot be transferred between people. The exception to this is Pre-Pay on Oyster.
