Hi all

I have asked the Northern Twitter Feed about compensation for purchasing one of these tickets but not being able to make full use of it due to their strike action on a Saturday and their siginificant cancellations on a Sunday. They told me to discuss it with their 'customer experience team'. Surely if I cannot make full use of their services with it, I would be entitled to a significant cost reduction?? What are your opinions, ticketmasters?

As the strike action and cancellations have been known for a long time and were presumably known before you purchased the ticket, then compensation might not be forthcoming.

Delay Repay does not cover tickets purchased after a delay or disruption is known.

As for "significant reduction", given the two days disruption, the most you could expect to be considered for would be 2/7ths of the ticket value.

Whether or not disruption is deemed 'known' will depend on the timetable information given to the passenger. Often, this will lag far behind "officially" announced strike days (at which point the eventual timetable is not usually yet published). Obviously with a rover ticket this is a little more complex, as no specific timetable is usually given in conjunction with the purchase of such a rover. I think the situation would therefore then depend on the timetable currently in force at the time of purchase.

Ultimately, getting Northern to pay out for compensation on strike days is often a fruitless affair in the informal stages of the claim, as they will claim - whether or not it is true - that they do not owe compensation where the timetable has been changed. A Court challenge might be necessary to change their attitude there.

These 7 day rover tickets should be withdrawn from sale then, in my opinion. If you cannot make full use of them over 7 days, they should not be sold

That would do me. Paying for a full 5 days only, when the full timetable is working, is fair enough.

Why should I be prevented from buying this ticket, just because you can't use it on the trains you want?

With a bit of luck the Northern customer expensive centre may be kind and issue you with a complimentary travel ticket for use on Northern. That is likely the best you'll get although there is no entitlement as such, don't ask don't get.
