This train is routed to Eccles station loop so the loco can run round and return to Ashburys and then to Guide Bridge yard. The route it takes involves crossing a few passenger main lines and the time taken is about 2hours. The rail distance between Ashburys and Guide Bridge is less than 4 miles, but the train probably covers 12 miles. Why can't the run round be done at Ashburys at the start of the journey? The track layout there looks capable of this and keeps the train off busy main lines except for the short distance between Gorton and Guide Bridge.I am aware that the down (?) former goods line between Ashburys and Gorton has not been used for years, though signalling is still active also a bit of vegetation management wouldn't go amiss.

I think there must be an issue at the Ashburys terminal that prevents run-rounds or makes them impractical (someone will probably be able to give more details in terms of layout or signalling).
When the route via New Mills and Romiley was blocked earlier this year, DB trains from Dowlow to Ashburys were able to divert via Hazel Grove - Stockport - Denton - Baguley Fold, arriving and departing into Ashburys from the Phillips Park end. However, they were top & tailed when they did this (and also top & tailed if they ran via Stockport - Denton - Guide Bridge Loop - Ashburys).
The usual pattern for Ashburys trains has been for 6H52 to arrive from Gorton and 6H53 to depart via Philips Park. I'd previously assumed the avoidance of a run round was just for convenience, but the top & tailing of diverted DB trains, along with 6Z20 running via Eccles, suggests there is something preventing a run round at Ashburys.

What is 6Z20? Some working hauling aggregates? What happens once it gets to Guide Bridge? End of journey?

The Breedon aggregate terminal at Ashburys has started receiving some of its stone from the quarry at Shap Summit this year, hauled by Freightliner.
