It will be a 67, no more 175, Arriva know that for sure, and via Wrexham

And if the coaches are not ready? Where do you get your info from sir. I still feel that this is your opinion and not fact. I feel it always better to quote facts or at least provide the viewer that this is your opinion. If the coaches are not ready they will either have to use a 175 or 67's top and tailed, the only other option is to hire the coaches in from somewhere. There is also the problem of training the guards & drivers on the coaches and DVT's and with no rest day option at ATW this is not going to be easy.

We will wait and see and I think ATW are in trouble with this proposal.

ATW have had plenty of time to sort things out. It's nice to see the new transport minister is not willing to be messed about.

The existing coaches would work with this service, as far as I understand, but may require modification in terms of "through wiring"?

December is still a couple of months away. Arriva have suddenly become "can do" since the new Minister came in.

I'm sorry if I have missed the point, but what is the point of the WAG express. Arriva provide regular Cardiff-Holyhead services with 175s, which are very very nice units (my fav 2nd gen DMU currently). The 57 service seemed to be overkill, and this with the 67s seems mental to be honest......

Well you are entitled to your opinion.

I think is basically boils down to providing an Inter City class service between North and South Wales. I think its great.

I have been on it twice, and it is superbly comfortable, but passenger loads are nothing a 3 car 175 coulndn't handle. I think its a great train to ride on/spot but I can't see how it make financial sense. A 175 is basically a 180 which is an InterCity unit, so the Cardiff-Holyhead services are still IC services.

I don't agree that a 175 is an Inter City class unit, no shop, no First Class. Nice trains, but more suited to 2-3 hr journeys.

The loco-hauled stock's been well used whenever I'm on it.

Mark 2 coaches will not work without a lot of extensive work, sorry Arriva will always be a "make do" as we can see from the stae of their current stock, it isn't arriva funding it is Welsh taxpayers as you know too well, no funding no loco haules service, no funding just the basic franchise agreed service.

I've posted the WG Rail budget sums from 2012 onward elsewhere, as you can see there's a cut in funding come April of £2.6 million. I can't see where WG will be paying for additional 67's from.

Of course, funding = subsidy, just like the rest of the service, the whole UK rail network is a publicly funded gravy train. What's your point?

Who knows how they will balance the books, but all departments are facing cuts of c. 5% year on year, bar health and education.

I've suggested elsewhere that running the new 67 LHCS as part of the core timetable, rather than "extra", might be a way forward, and could could cascade stock elsewhere whilst providing a North South IC class service, which is what's needed.

You'd have some savings on staffing but the way the money tree is organised means that your cascaded stock will still have to be leased and will still pay track access and your 67's and LHCS will have to pay track access and other leasing charges. Its still means "extra" £. Privitsation placed a transaction charge on everything on the premise that therefore a profit could be made on everything but in reality this has fueled the massive hike in costs since 93.

Here's the WG budget there's £4 million less over the next couple of years.

Improve Domestic Connectivity (regional and National)
Improve Public Transport (Rail)

Dept Revenue £ Millions

2011/12 175,598
2012/13 172,371 Interestingly the drop is 2.617 a sum that may be familiar?
2013/14 171,579
2014/15 171,579

Capital £ Millions

2011/12 27,105
2012/13 47,142 any guess's at £20 million spike?
2013/14 27,426
