I notice a track side leaver for the points in the first picture, but looking at the third picture I assume this controls the points in front of the train and not where the train has derailed, not sure whether there is a track side lever for the points the train sits on

You have question the state of the track in some of these sidings though, doubt many of these sidings and freight only lines on the network are fit for passenger use

Still its too early to jump to conclusions on this incident, we will wait for the proffessionals to say how it happened

Yes I think the visible lever controls the point the loco didn't reach. However going by the signal position the one underneath the loco is almost certainly hand worked as well, and my guess would be that the loco has derailed on those facing points. There are several ways a train might derail on facing points, including point not fully home, blade moving under train, broken switch rail, broken/missing check rail, damaged crossing, or worn switch leading to flange climbing.

I believe it is, judging by its position in relation to the mainline and the lack of any indication otherwise (as far as I can see) on the Quail map (book 3 15D).
