66048 stripped for spares

This could make people happy.

The power unit from crash damaged 66048 (James the Engine) has been removed and transferred into 66005 as part of the repair of the latter.

66048, devoid of most of its internals has been noted being shunted about at Toton.

that doesnt mean that its going to go for scrap...

its not been unusual in recent years for DBS to use one loco as a "christmas tree" for parts untill new or replacement parts can be ordered/delivered to get the "christmas tree" back into service... seem to recall the same happening with class 6 (bad example) and even class 67s...


even GBRf did it with 66579-66581... with 66579 being used for parts to return 66580-66581 to service quickly and then replacement/new parts sourced and fitted to return 66579 to use

im not saying that it isnt going for scrap... nor am i saying that i won't go for scrap in the future...

im only saying that just because its having parts removed.. doesnt mean that it IS going for scrap


dont misunderstand me... im not bothered if it goes for scrap.. i dont need it for sight or haulage or any of those reasons that you hear enthusiasts use... i dont do any of them.. im simply making a point that using it for parts doesnt mean its being prepared for scraping

Don't forget the loco is not currently owned by DB Schenker but is leased from Angel Trains so it would be their decision as to whether the loco is scrapped or not.

Yeah it was the one that derailed at Carrbridge.

EWS (DBS) were waiting for confirmation they could work on the loco following the accident report, just in case it was required for a subsequent legal case, but this was confirmed earlier this year
Very shortly afterwards it became a source for spares

Just to go off on a bit of a tangent, why is the term 'Christmas Tree' used nowadays instead of simply something being 'cannibalised'??! Just curious!

maybe whoever coined the term thinks it makes the process sound more warm and fuzzy than cannibilising

The part they may be after means removing other parts to get to it

I recall 66031 being used in the same way when its engine blew up a few years ago but it was eventually fixed up, it happens all the time although it is not as common as it once was.

66031 never lost it's power unit though. 66005 suffered big end failure which damaged the crank, and the power units from 66048 and 66005 have been swapped in order to make one good loco from the two. AFAIK there are no plans to scrap 66048.

It makes sense robbing a stopped unit/loco until parts can be brought in.
