Does anyone else have big doubts that the "big T" was actually built from scratch. I find it very hard to believe especially since the Flying Scot has not been seen for well a while i suspect some parts were used off that.

Do you also believe that there is a strategic reserve of steam locos hidden in a tunnel somewhere? I think that's about as likely....

There is sure to be parts of steam loco's lying around in scrap yards and stuff just need to find em. At a old farm house where a guy does up old steam loco there is a load of parts lying around a back yard which he sells to anyone who wants them. Just saying for the whole thing to be built by hand, bit by bit, piece by piece is a bit much to believe.

I don't think they said it was all built by hand - even back in the 1800s machines existed to build things. If you can find a source which quotes the A1SLT as saying the whole thing was built by hand, I'd be interested to see it.

Loco is 100% new parts!!!

Didn't mean litrally by hand but still not conviced its 100% New parts specially built for that, probs just the occasional part taking of the flying Scot and other steam loco's not used anymore and put together to make a new one.

I read some nonsense in forums, but this really does take the biscuit.

A lot of enthusiasts put a lot of subscription money into Tornado. She was built completely new, using the original Peppercorn A1 blueprints, and the boiler was built in Germany.

Absolutely! Does our clueless friend really think that the NRM would give away/sell parts of a loco which it is struggling to find the money to return to working order. And, in the main, other steam locos are having to have parts made for them - there isn't a huge stock of steam loco spares lying around!

Why did they not name it when it first came into service? Would have made more sence.

I don't think that would've given them as much publicity as having Prince Charles name it and then have the loco haul the Royal Train. (Look at the number of people who went to York - how many of them would have done had it been announced Mark Allett was naming the loco!)

I would have turned out to see that although the honour of hauling the Royal Train made the occassion all the more meorable.

I agree entirely - Tornado with the Royal Train headboard looked magnificent!

Also, I think it's important to those that have built the engine to see it being given royal recognition - it's an honour for them, as much as an added attraction.
