60+ Oyster Question

I have a 60+ Oyster which is valid to Shenfield.

If travelling beyond here (on trains that stop) I use the Oyster to Shenfield and book to my destination from there.

Tomorrow’s journey is Upminster – Wivenhoe, so I’ll book a return from Shenfield to Wivenhoe.

If I don’t change trains at Shenfield on the return my Oyster will not have been tapped in.

As it’s a 60+ Oyster, so travel is free, does this matter, or do I need to get out at Shenfield to tap in.

There's no need to touch in or out for the 60+ Oyster card to be valid. However, it is only valid beyond Zone 6 to Shenfield on Elizabeth line services; it's not valid on Greater Anglia services. See the validity map here.

Therefore, you will have to change at Shenfield to/from an Elizabeth line service if you want to avoid paying extra for travel between Harold Wood/Boundary Zone 6 and Shenfield.

As above, there's no need to exit the barriers and touch in/out at Shenfield.

I hadn't realised it was only valid on Elizabeth Line services.
I've done this quite often - fortunately haven't been challenged.
From now on I'll either book from Romford or make sure I always change to the Elizabeth Line.

A ticket from Boundary Zone 6 would suffice, but yes, that's a good idea going forwards.

NB once you are old enough for a Freedom Pass, that is valid across the same area, with the addition of Elizabeth line validity (but not GWR) from West Drayton to Reading.
