Some pic's of 60 007 being tested, how long has it been stored as it looks quite weather beaten.

Could 60 081 have a engine transplant & be working again or is it to far gone to save..?

60007 is supposed to be the first Super 60. High res pictures show it looking very new indeed, bodywork aside. The internal gubbins through the side grilles look brand new.

Makes a change DBS sending an overhauled loco out looking like crap, rather than a shiny repainted internally knackered example *cough*37's*cough*.

If ever I were to have a favourite loco, it would be this one, since I drove it up and down one of the sidings at Immingham TMD on my 13th birthday, during a signallers strike.

I believe it was named Robert Adam back then..

60007 is indeed the first of the 'Super 60s'

Engine has been out, everything inside painted and/or renewed, bogies overhauled, engine overhauled, new governer and turbo, cab roofs and cooler group renewed (hence the colour of these), and it will be painted in red before release to traffic...

Any difference in capability to a "standard" 60 (power/speed), or is it just a complete refurb?

So a standard 60 in a party frock then.

The governors and turbos were (are) indeed a bit of an achilles heel on the 60s, and I am told that they are new items, not the same as the originals. I was also told they are to be 80mph locos, but I am yet to see if this is the case, TOPS still shows 007 to be 60 mph still.

List of 60s in the plan are 60007/54/9/63/74/9/91 as far as I can tell at the moment.

Not just regear, but I would assume that the suspension would require some work as well, such as the fitting of yaw dampers or somesuch, given that the machines kinetic envelope might be a slight big larger at 80mph compared to 60?

In my view class 60's are the best locos for hauling heavy trains about the rails.
2600 tons out of the quarry at Rylstone without a cough or sneeze, attaining 60 mph just after leaving Skipton, and keeping at 60 all the way to Leeds.
Good for ballast turns as they are nice and cumfy and silent unless you have the cab heating fan on .

Can't see DBS going for a full regear to achieve 80mph somehow...

According to Loco Fitter i think it was a while ago, it isnt a regear. The electrics have had something done to them, to enable faster speeds. Apparently it wasnt a lack of engine power, but the electrics that kept the speed at 60mph.
Think thats what he said a while back anyway.

If they have managed to make them 80mph, then thats brilliant. Such strong locos, and capable of 80mph. So thats stronger than a 66, about the same speed, and using less fuel than a 66. Not bad at all.

I gather they were electronically governed to 60mph. It's really good to see these locos getting a bit of money put into them and becoming more widespread. They have a lot of potential.

So are the Super 60s going to become a new subclass or retain their existing fleet numbers? I would have thought that, from a maintenance POV, it would make sense to make them easily identifiable from the unmodded ones.

The motors will have had their overspeed changed then.

As they were, the TMs would have been running far faster than designed at 80mph and would have destroyed themselves, so something has obviously been done so that they're fine with the existing gearing.

I have asked some questions, and the following is as accurate as I can find.

The 'super 60s' are having a complete overhaul, every nut and bolt on the power units, and bogies, all machines overhauled, so they should be like new engines.

New turbos and governors are being fitted, BUT at present they are the same design as the originals, although they are overhauled items.

Different mods are being examined, such as alteration of compression ratios, cam profiles, twin napier turbos amongst others. If business requrements call for it, they will be upgraded to 80 mph, although they are currently remaining 60 mph. There will be no regearing or additional bogie mods required to make them 80 mph apparently.

Not as many changes as I was lead to belive, but there are mods in the pipeline, which (I assume) will be fitted to the modded locos as and when the mods come on line...

They are THE BEST loco's and it is a shame that they were neglected due to the preference shown by management for the 66. Many of whom had never been on the footplate of any loco.

Someone else mentioned possible changes to maximum speed. If I remember right, the design maximum speed was 62mph. Not being an engineer I don't know what would have to be done to make the loco suitable for 80mph running although that seems an odd speed to select as I would thought 75mph would have been sufficient as that is class 4 speed.

56's and 58's were 80mph locos. It does seem an odd top speed to have. The 60's were designed for operating at or about 60mph, I'd hazard a guess at this was because the low gearing meant they weren't really efficient at express freight work. Initially they weren't actually governed (mechanically or electrically) to any speed limit, they'd go as fast as mechanically possible but take an age to get there. I believe they soon found themselves limited to 62. I've read a tale on WNXX of a pair of new 60's on a railtour in the early 90's, in multi, that supposedly topped 90mph.
