Indeed, and to take an example from a few weeks ago, a signal failure at Finsbury Park was not FCC's fault.
But
- the NRE website saying all trains were on time apart from the next one I wanted which was cancelled
- their website saying all trains were running to Alexandra Palace (which I assumed was from WGC/Hertford south so went to the station)
- station announcements saying no trains were running and the automated system announcing every single train of the day that was listed as cancelled one-by-one
- me (after buying a ticket, because the speaker announcing the above is past the ticket machine) going back to getting on a bus and as it goes past the next station down the line the train that was 'cancelled'...
was right there picking up a queue of passengers!
The next week I used a taxi as I knew I would end up getting where I needed to be on time!
However offtopic this may sound, it shows that even when things are not the TOCs fault, how the TOC treats its customers sticks in their mind
