So, this is a curiosity I've wondered about for a while, namely because I keep seeing this train when waiting at Waterbeach for a train home.
Open Train Times shows the following:
2H42 Runs Liverpool St to Ely and becomes 5H20
5H20 Runs 1743 ECS Ely - Cambridge Plat 5, becomes 2H20
2H20 Runs 1824 Cambridge - Ely, become 5H93
5H93 Runs 1845 ECS to Cambridge Carriage Sidings.
My question is why run the 5H20/2H20 service at all. Seeing it depart Cambridge it always looks fairly empty and it runs just after 1H82 Liverpool St to Kings Lynn.
Conversely, my train 1T94 is always reasonably full and would probably benefit from 5H20 being run in passenger service the other way. Given the following train is always a reasonable amount later (1N65), there it shouldn't have any issue with a station stop at Waterbeach (albeit Waterbeach itself is fairly empty at that time, judging by the fullness of both 1N65 and 1T94, I'd suggest Ely wasn't).
