My sincere apologies if I've hijacked this thread 55013.
No apology necessary!
I enjoy reading all the trip reports on here, but especially the ones from the old days and any bit of reminiscing is alright by me, regardless of which thread it ends up in.
I well remember those ex Scottish 47s appearing.
In fact, I've just dug out a shot of 47635, complete with dominoes and stag, in your neck of the woods.
December 1990, little more than a month before the end.

I'd just done it from Leeds and shortly after did it back
Anyway, on with the show.
It turns out I managed to get one last trip in during 2015.
After visiting relatives on Christmas day and spending Saturday and Sunday relaxing at home, my wife suggested that I might like a few hours out on Monday the 28th whilst she tidied the house.
“No thanks, love, I’ll stay here and give you a hand” I said.
Actually, that’s not what I said
As on previous occasions this year when presented with a last minute opportunity for a few hours out, I decided to get a few more West Yorkshire stations ticked off.
My original plan was to drive to Apperley Bridge but a quick check on RTT showed that nothing was running between Leeds and Shipley, due to flooding.
West Yorkshire’s newest station (for now) will just have to wait until 2016.
Several times this year I had left work intending to stay on board my train home and take it to Micklefield.
On all but one of those occasions my train had reached Bradford and I had thought “Ah, stuff it, I can do Micklefield another day” and gone home instead.
On the one occasion I did make a serious attempt at it (getting out of work early especially for the task) the 153/155 pairing I was on suffered a fault and an emergency brake application saw the train stop for a lengthy spell before crawling on to Bradford and terminating.
So I went home.
Just for the avoidance of doubt, this was a unit problem and not a driver issue – it had happened earlier in the journey, between Manchester and Halifax, as well.
Now I was determined that it was Micklefield or bust.
As Apperley Bridge was out, I drove to Bradford and took 158756 from Interchange to Leeds.
Although this train stopped at Micklefield I had something else on the agenda.
In over thirty years of enthusing I had, as far as I can recall, never done a train out of platform 14 at Leeds.
This is one of two East facing bays and only sees a couple of trains a day.
I had noticed on RTT that the 09.50 Leeds to Selby was one of the trains that’s booked to use it and what’s more, the 09.50 stopped at Micklefield, so I could kill two birds with one stone.
I’m not a BLS type but I do like to get little bits of track in if they interest me and the only required platform at Leeds fitted the bill.
It was 144023 that had the task of taking me from platform 14 to Micklefield and in true BLS style I sat as near to the buffer stops as possible before departure
Platform 14:

The down side of doing this service is that it has a plus zero for something back and sure enough 150270 was just pulling into platform 2 as I bailed out of 144023 at
Micklefield.
Obviously I knew about this and considered the prospect of a half hour fester to be worth it to get platform 14.
As it’s a staggered platform I had no chance of getting over for the 150.
So a half hour fester is what I got.
To be fair, it wasn’t too bad, with several units passing through which kept my camera busy.
I don't think I can make it:

Now it was a trip to the other side of the county as I had another couple of things lined up.
It was dud for the day 158756 that I took back to Leeds where I intended to get the next Doncaster bound EMU.
This was 322482, but as I had already cleared all four coaches of it and a sub thousand mile 91 was due to leave five minutes before it I opted for the loco instead.
I took 91105, still below the thousand, but now a little bit closer, to Wakefield and then five minutes later boarded the 322.
When I had been stood at Leeds waiting for the doors to be opened on 144023 I had observed the “ePacer”, 144012, waiting to head to Sheffield.
I fancied trying it out and so had done a bit of research.
My plan all along had been to do the 322 to Fitzwilliam and catch the service from Sheffield back.
It was a happy coincidence that the train I intended to do and the one that I expected 144012 to work were one and the same.
322482 was duly taken to
Fitzwilliam, a station that I had actually visited before, photographing, but never by train.
As anticipated, after a short wait it was 144012 that arrived.
My verdict?
It’s alright, I suppose.
A 21st century pacer, apparently:

Anyway, I bailed off 144012 at Westgate and then gave some thought to what I could do next.
A large chunk of the stations that I need in the area are on the Huddersfield to Sheffield line and so I thought about catching the next service over.
Unfortunately, when I had a look at the timetable it turns out the hourly Sheffield train leaves Huddersfield three minutes before the one from Wakefield arrives.
My other option was to take the next Doncaster service to South Elmsall.
This was a station I hadn’t bothered doing before because it involves a fifty-minute fester when coming from the Wakefield direction as you have to wait for the same unit coming back.
I decided that if it was a unit with two required coaches then I would bite the bullet and get it in the book.
There were only two EMUs that fitted the bill, 322481 and 322483.
It was 322483 that turned up and so I boarded in coach 78165 and headed to the salubrious surrounds of
South Elmsall.
I thoroughly enjoyed my fifty minutes soaking up the opulent atmosphere of South Elmsall.
That’s a lie.
The place is a dump.
The station was full of youths, smoking dope and spitting all over the place (I hate spitting!) as well as adults who were smoking ordinary cigs and spitting and a lone cyclist who was just spitting.
South Elmsall – not for the faint hearted
South Elmsall, early arrivals for the cannabis party can be seen skinning up in the shelter opposite (no joke!):

I had a bit of a wander around the town but didn’t see much to improve my opinion of the place, so I mooched back and joined the meeting of the South Elmsall spitting society on the platform.
Eventually 322483 re-appeared and I went in 63139 for the run through to Leeds.
That leaves me needing four coaches from West Yorkshire’s EMU fleet – one each from 321901 and 322485 and two from 322481.
My plan now was to get two more shacks in then go home.
Once at Leeds it was round to platform 1 and the pairing of 153324/150226 which I took to
Headingley.
A short wait saw an identical pairing appear, this time 153304 leading 150228.
I did these to Leeds and then back out again to
Burley Park.
Fifth and final winning shack of the day:

150114 was the traction back to Leeds and then I was thinking of heading home.
158790 was on a Huddersfield via Bradford service and so I did that.
Due to the flooding mentioned earlier, the train was wedged as everyone going to Bradford was having to come this way.
I realised that this train met my usual train home from work at Halifax and knowing this was almost always a 142 I decided to stay on 158790 when it emptied at Interchange.
I’m still after two Northern 142 coaches, one each from 142060 and 142061, so hoped it would be one of them for my last run.
In the event, it was 142025 that produced for a carbon copy of my commute home.
Once back at Interchange it was over to my car and home before five.
So, not a bad day at all, with five shacks scratched, not to mention finally getting something out of platform 14 at Leeds and another ten miles on 91105.
I now need twelve West Yorkshire stations (plus two that should open within the next few months), not bad when you consider that I required about 35 at the start of 2015.
No prizes for guessing that one of my aims for 2016 is to clear my home county!
