Fair enough, my wife hates gigs too. I'm a big believer in the principle of "If you don't like it, don't do it."

Nothing wrong with having a varied taste in music.
I hate it when somebody says that because you like band A you must hate band B, etc, etc.

As for Joy Division and New Order, it's a very interesting story if you're unfamiliar with it.
"Seminal post punk band" Joy Division released two albums, with their singer Ian Curtis commiting suicide before the second one was released.
Their final single, Love Will Tear Us Apart, sounds as fresh today as it did 35 years ago (to me, anyway) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuuObGsB0No
The remaining members then formed New Order and went to to produce innovative music including the biggest selling 12" single in history - Blue Monday (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYH8DsU2WCk)
Sorry, I've been rambling.
you might be able to tell I'm a fan :)
Sadly, there's some animosity between Peter Hook and the rest of New Order these days.

Top tune is, Love will tear us apart and Transmission, are among my tunes on my phone, along with various Punk, Metal and various other rock stuff, which I while away on many a trip, the Voyagers to and from Derby were drowned out by the likes. I like sone New Order songs but they're not a patch on Joy Division. His stuff with Monaco was much better.

OT (apology) but it is amazing how many sounds of that time do, after a gap of many years, 'travel well' (and hence remain on topic:D). Maybe room for a music discussion in the relevant part of the forum?

I might have to rename this thread "55013's Contemporary Trip Reports and Music Reviews" :)

I agree New Order can be a bit hit and miss, but when they're good they're very, very good.
Monaco produced some great stuff.
Interestingly Hooky's touring band (The Light) currently has his Monaco band mate David Potts on guitar (gen from 45135), so chucking a few of their numbers in would be nice.
If anyone is interested the Story of Joy Division is on BBC4 at midnight next Friday/Saturday night.

Anyway, enough music.
I'm just in the process of writing something about trains and will post it shortly.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

And Lo, after forty days and forty nights in the wilderness (actually, it was 34 days in West Yorkshire, which is much the same) 55013 returned to the land of bashing in the realm of the third rail.

Enough of that wibble, how people could ever write like that is a mystery to me.

Anyway, it’s been over a month since my last big move, although luckily my sabbatical coincided with the release of the latest version of bashing simulator “Hellfire”, so any free time I had was spent in Summer 1981 doing virtual Deltics on the ECML :)

I had booked a seat on the 07.13 off Wakefield, my train of choice for a London visit, but decided on a slight change from previous trips.
Having an m-card meant that I could board at an earlier station and so, having checked the timetable to make sure I could get back in the evening, I drove to Shipley.
Free car parking and a shorter drive from home were the deciding factors, although some thirty extra miles of 91 haulage also played a part.

The 07.13 from Wakefield is the 06.30 Bradford – Kings Cross, so no need to change trains.
The day started with sub thousand mile 91125, which was nice.
This hauled me to Leeds and then pushed me to London.
Once in the capital I strolled over to St Pancras and headed down to Platform A as I knew a pair of 387s were due in.
Sure enough winner 387110 and dud 387115 arrived a couple of minutes after I did and I boarded for the run to East Croydon.
As has been my want on recent trips, Gatwick Express 442s were on the agenda and I had decided to do the trip to Victoria via East Croydon in order to get a couple of mainline units done in preference to the London Underground.
A new sub-class for me followed with 377604 being taken for the second leg of my journey to Victoria.

Having now had over half the class naturally means that winning 442s are not a foregone conclusion, but my luck was in.
Doyen of the class 442401, leading 442421, was first up and I didn’t have long to wait at Gatwick as another requirement, 442415 was waiting to head back.
This was another pair and 15s companion was 442409.

My original plan had been to head over to Fenchurch Street for some 357s but I decided against it and plumped for staying South, making it up as I went along.
377136 and 377449 were employed to take me back to East Croydon whilst I thought about what to do.
Essentially, my plan now was to see what turned up, if it was a winner then do it and see where it took me.
It was 171725 that produced and so it was off to London Bridge.
I now fancied some shack scratching and so I made my way to the Eastern Platforms.
I was hoping for a pair of 376s on the Cannon Street – Cannon Street service but it was 465028 leading dud 466011 and 465914 that turned up.
Now, where to bail?
Looking at the list I misread Crayford as Crayfish and so that was the place.
My reasoning really is that pathetic :)
It was on this leg of the journey that I got a text from 45135 saying he was simultaneously bashing 45041.
I bailed at Crayfish, sorry Crayford and had only a few minutes before I was heading back the way I had come on 466027, which was in the middle of a ten coach rake, with 465190 and 465165 being the outer units.

Networkers ahoy:
EMU 465190_2015.09.25_Crayford by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I wanted to be back at East Croydon as I had read on the forum that the 17.49 off there (the 17.06, I think, from Brighton) was now a pair of lovely 442s.
I had plenty of time to do this and so continued the Shark scratching with a Great White.
Oh, hang on.
No, it was shack scratching and I bailed from the 465/466 combo at New Cross.
378209 was next taken to my third new station of the day, Whitechapel.
Happily, no Nineteenth Century serial killers or Twentieth Century gangsters were in evidence on my short visit to the East End.
378153 then took me to my final winning shack, West Croydon.
This unit was quite full when I got on and I stood, leaning on one of those upright seat things.
I’m sure they have a proper name.
As the train progressed it got fuller and fuller.
At Canada Water the train got really full and an elderly couple got on with the crowd.
As the sixth form photography students that filled the coach showed no sign of giving up their seats I stood to one side to allow the old lady to at least perch where I had been.
As my reward she let out a very smelly belch, right under my nose.
Lovely.
No good deed goes unpunished.

I made my way from West to East Croydon on tram 2543.

Croydon Tram 2543_2015.09.25_East Croydon by Phil Wood, on Flickr

My plan worked and 442423 was the rear unit of the train from Brighton, with 442404 on the front.
I took these to London Bridge, obviously.
I was now thinking of heading home and decided that I had time for another run on the 442s.

It's getting hard to find different views of 442s!
EMU 442404_2015.09.25_London Bridge by Phil Wood, on Flickr

442404 is one of those units that had been done as the second of a winning pair and so I had never ridden on the unit itself.
That was rectified as I took it, still with 442423 of course, back out to East Croydon.
I was aiming for a Bedford service that was due to arrive at St Pancras half an hour before my train home from Kings Cross.
In theory plenty of time, but I was a bit worried when I saw it was late, not least because I know how much time can be lost trundling along on the line through Elephant and Castle, especially if the train has lost its path.
Luckily, 377518 and 377208 actually clawed back the lost minutes and arrival at St Pancras was on time.
This was a new experience for me.

My journey back to Yorkshire produced low mileage 91132.
This was the third time I’ve had it this year and the mileage is now a much more respectable figure.
I must now confess to a heinous crime.
As mentioned my car was in Shipley.
I had a first class ticket to Wakefield.
My m-card is standard class.
I stayed in First for the bit from Wakefield to Leeds.
I’m truly sorry and repent for my sins.
Anyway, looking on RTT, the train was due into platform 8 at 22.21, with a Skipton unit leaving platform 5 at 22.26.
We had been on time all the way so it looked like a case of stepping off the rear of the London and strolling nonchalantly round for the Skipton.
Jobs a good ‘un.
Or not.
We got held just outside the station.
22.26 came and went.
The unit didn’t pass us.
There is another one half an hour later but I was shattered and really didn’t fancy any sort of fester.

Eventually we started moving and as we pulled into the platform I noticed two things.
One was that the Skipton service was still stood on 5 and the crowd of people indicated that the doors hadn’t been opened yet.
The other was that we were going into platform 9, not 8.
As soon as the door opened I leapt out and broke my “no running” rule.
I ran up the escalator, with many an “excuse me”’, over the bridge and down the other side.
I’m sure I saw the hologram woman at the bottom swoon as she observed an idiot running down a moving escalator.
Maybe I made that bit up.
Anyway, I legged it round and the train was being whistled, but luckily(!) it was so wedged that not everyone was on and so I managed to join the scrum and get a few millimetres of standing space in 153352.
158796 was the leading unit of the train and I bailed at Shipley for the short drive home.

So another enjoyable move in the bag.

Another excellent trip had there, I assume you're nearly done with the 442s now?

Loved the shark attack thing, we might have to name the thread differently in 2016

You faredodger with regards to that last bit into Leeds! ;)

Did you have some fish for your tea?

*makes a note to try and do some 442 bashing one evening between Victoria/Clapham/Croydon*

Humour certainly has its Plaice and we’ve all been having a Whale of a time but I think this marine theme is starting to Flounder.

I need five outright (2402/2405/2408/2412 & 2414) plus 4 "second choice" ones (2403/2421/2422 & 2424)

:)

Anyway, enough frivolity, let's get back to the job in hand.
For the last few years I have leased a car through work and today it had to be returned.
When I collected it three years ago it was from a garage a few hundred yards from where I work, which was very convenient.
I was a bit put out when I was told I had to return it to Fleet Management in Castleford.
A bit put out until I realised I would have to make my own way back.
I soon spotted an opportunity for a rail journey and decided a shack scratch was in order :)

After finishing what jobs I had to do in Halifax I drove over to Castleford and left my old car behind.
I originally planned to walk to Castleford station, but that's dud and so a quick look on my phone showed that it was only a couple of miles to a required station on the same line.
Thirty odd minutes after leaving I arrived at Glasshoughton.
It was 144013 that picked me up and took me to Pontefract Monkhill.
A short fester there and it was the same 144, this time to Wakefield Kirkgate, then 158815 to Leeds and 155346 back to more familiar territory.

So, a nice short trip with two winning stations and all at the insistence of my employers.
Can't be bad :)

Thanks.
My colleagues were all too aware of it, mainly because of my chuntering when informed that I would have to take it to Castleford and make my own way back!
It worked out rather nicely in the end.
Going the way I did meant that I arrived at Leeds about five minutes before the direct train that I had originally planned to do, which in turn meant I made 155346, which left three minutes before that one arrived, so I was actually back early :)
I have an m-card, so there's nothing to claim back and yes I've bought a new car, which I picked up last night.
Mrs 13 and I are off on holiday today, so I'll be driving it to Kent later.
I hope there's nothing wrong with it!

Bloody hell that must be expensive in the divorce courts - your lawyers must love you! ;)

Enjoyed reading the reports - keep it up!

Thanks.
Mrs 13 is, I'm glad to say, my first (and hopefully last) wife :)

Kent is pretty decent. Maybe a bit near London for my taste! :

 The nearest we got to London was the M25, which was a nightmare as usual.
The car did 800 miles without problems, so it's a good start.

Any more of your Contemporary Fish Reports coming soon?:P

I think that particular trawler has sailed. :)
I did manage a few winners on our Kent trip, which hopefully I'll be able to write about in the next couple of days.

Well, that’s another holiday over with and happily it included a few train rides :)

We drove down to Kent on Friday the second and spent the weekend visiting historical sites by car.
As usual we planned on having a day to do our own thing and my wife told me that she fancied having a lazy day on Monday and so that’s when I went out on the hunt for winners.

I had done some research and had decided that the thing to do was get us a couple of Kent Rovers.
There were places we could visit by rail and I would definitely get my money’s worth out of the ticket.
I pondered just getting the one and buying individual tickets for Mrs 13 but felt that £40 was a reasonable price and the extra flexibility it would allow made it the right choice.

Our campsite was in Seasalter, only a couple of miles from Whitstable station, and so a fairly easy walk.
I set off on Monday morning at 9 o’clock, my aim being to make a service that left around 09.50.
I made it with plenty of time to spare and purchased the two tickets, even though the wife wasn’t with me.

The first move was 395015, which I took from Whitstable to Sittingbourne as my plan was to score the branch on the Isle Of Sheppy.
466025 was sampled throughout to Sheerness-On-Sea and then taken back as far as the end of the single line section at Swale.
This move was then reversed with 466019.

466019:
EMU 466019_2015.10.05_2_Swale by Phil Wood, on Flickr

I could have just shuttled backwards and forwards between Sittingbourne and Whitstable and would no doubt have got plenty of winners, but I wanted variety in my moves and so every train from now on went somewhere different, although always with the intention of not hanging around for too long .
The next unit provided me with my third class of the day, it was 375917 and I scooped this to Herne Bay.
My previous experiences of the lines around Kent had been very limited and so almost every station was required.
Some stations on the line were deliberately ignored today as I knew we would be visiting them over the next couple of days.
375825 was the traction out of Herne Bay and this was done to Rainham.

EMU 375825_2015.10.05_1_Rainham by Phil Wood, on Flickr

My next haulage was also the next up numerically, 375826 and this was taken to Dover Priory.
I did this because I needed the track South of Canterbury East.
The bit North of there having been done on a Green Express charter from Huddersfield several years ago.
My plan at Dover was to catch a “Javelin” to a required station the other side of Ramsgate and then head back to Whitstable.
However, I viewed 375826 coupling up to a required sister unit and that was leaving first so I boarded 375624 and took the pair to Canterbury East.
Looking on RTT I had seen that the train I was on was all stations and the one half an hour behind at Dover was fast, stopping only at Canterbury between its origin and Faversham.
The extra stops on my service meant that I only had a wait of twenty minutes and so another potential winner couldn’t be ignored.
It was the right decision as 465921, which was to prove my only 465 of the week, arrived on time and I took this to Faversham.
I had also worked out that I could still finish on the service that I had planned to initially and so it was off to Birchington-On-Sea aboard 395023.
At Herne Bay I passed the 395 I would have done from Dover if I had stuck to my original plan.
It was required 395027, but if I’d done that I would have missed 395023, 465921 and 375624, so my decision was the right one.
Sadly my day finished with a dud unit, 375619, which I took back to Whitstable.
All that remained was the walk back to Seasalter and I was home in time for tea.

All in all a very enjoyable day, but I wasn’t finished yet.

On Tuesday we had a couple of Tudor fortifications on the agenda and so it was back into Whitstable, on the bus this time.
Dud from the day before 395023 was what we took to Walmer.

EMU 395023_2015.10.06_4_Walmer by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Once at Walmer we walked down to the castle (the place where the Duke Of Wellington spent his final days) and from there it was a sea front stroll to Deal Castle.

It should come as no surprise when I say that after finishing at the excellent castle we walked up to the railway station, which was another winner for me :)
It was also a winning unit as 395016 was what produced to take us from Deal back to Whitstable and the walk back to the camp.

Wednesday was the last day that involved trains and we again started by catching the bus into Whitstable.
Once at the station I had a stroke of luck.
As we were sat waiting for our train 375818 pulled in on the opposite platform.
I got my camera out to take a shot and was therefore perfectly placed when two old friends of mine appeared.
73141 came belting round the corner on the RHTT.
It was moving at a fair rate of knots and there was no chance I would have had time to get the camera out if I didn’t have it primed already.
I had done 73141 from Brighton to Portsmouth Harbour way back in July 1990.
On the rear was 73128, a loco that I had more recently.
In June 1998!

73141_2015.10.07_Whitstable_& 375818 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

73128_2015.10.07_2_Whitstable_& 73141 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

The first haulage of the day was provided by 395028 and we took this to Sandwich.
We had a walk around the town, and then returned to the station to find things in chaos.
Due to overhead wire problems at Stratford there were numerous delays and cancellations.
When our train arrived, luckily only thirty late, it was dud 395014.
We intended to take this to Broadstairs but there was an announcement that it would be none stop between Ramsgate and Faversham so we had no choice but to bail.
Ramsgate is one of the few Kent stations that was unrequired before this trip, but I had some compensation in that we had got off a dud unit and boarded a winner.
Mrs 13 was strangely unmoved by the chance of an extra score.
375813 was taken for the two and a bit mile run to Broadstairs.
Having spent some time enjoying the seaside and a look around the Charles Dickens Museum it was back to the station to find that the situation hadn’t really improved.
A Margate service had been cancelled and the platform was filling up.
I put forward the suggestion that we should head West and get on our intended train back to home earlier in order to beat the crowd.
This was agreed and so we boarded 375909 and 375814 for a run of about a mile and a quarter to the next station, which just happened to be required :)
This was Dumpton Park and was my fourteenth and final winning shack of the week.
Not only did my idea produce a winning station, it also proved to work as we easily got a double seat on the train, worked by 375812.
As anticipated, at Broadstairs it filled up, mainly with school kids.
After reaching Whitstable it was back to the camp site and the train moves for the week were over with.
The next few days were spent visiting places further afield by car.

So, in summary:

An excellent time had, even with disruption doing its best to mess things up. Tons of winners and required shacks, even a bit of required track!

It must have been quite handy with the wife wanting a lazy day, good to have such options.

When will you be out on a proper crankfest next?

Have you done Sandwich to Minster yet? That stretch of track is the only parly service I've been on so far.

Sounds like a few good days in Kent :)

Compared to other rovers the Kent rover isn't that good value for money but it is good value for money compared to the fares charged in Kent (which can be a bit eye watering)

In an age where interesting loco worked stuff is generally known about well in advance, it's nice that a couple of 73s can still turn up out of the blue! I particularly like the 'jetting' photo.
