I think I meant to imply a lot of sarcasm when I suggested the TGV ride might be interesting  The ride through the Alps must have been exciting though, not many chances you get to do such a thing.

Darn it, I want to go on a Eurostar bash now...

On re-reading it, I do manage to detect a bit of sarcasm :)
Racing through the mountains was fun, that's for sure :)

Some serious mileage (or kilometrage) done there - this excellent website reckons about 870km, and inspiration for a future European holiday, family permitting. On second thoughts, I might leave them at home. ;)

That was a great read. Have done a bit of French and Italian railways in the past. Have also had the impending feeling of doom when foreign travel and hotel plans go down the latrine...
Loved the taxi driver story!

Thanks, we were a bit peeved at the time, but in retrospect we both have great memories of the whole trip.

That was then, this is now and a more contemporary trip needs reporting, so here we go.

Another month, another annual leave day taken and once more I was London bound.
Luckily I had managed to get a cheap-ish seat on my train of choice, the 07.13 from Wakefield.
This is pretty much solidly a 91 and after a year of mixed fortunes (despite all my London trips, I’ve only had three so far in 2016 – although they were my three lowest mileage ones) I was hoping it would be a sub thousand miles machine.
As the train approached the station I saw a DVT was leading, hurrah it’s not a HST.
82224 was on the front and the loco was 91102!
Bah, my highest mileage one.
By the time I got to Kings Cross 91102 was on 1803.67 miles, so 2000 is a distinct possibility.

On the journey South I had pondered my moves and decided to head East.
I was going to top up my 321s but otherwise it would be my usual haphazard approach which should hopefully gain me some winning units and one or two new shacks.

Time was of the essence. So I made my way over to St Pancras and dud 395006 for the five minute or so run to Stratford International.

The Docklands Light Railway provided me with my first winners, 134 & 127, as well as my first new shack because I stayed on until Stratford High Street before going back to Stratford on 08 & 77.

It was on to the mainline now and my desire to get some 321s was immediately sated when 321355 and 321307 were boarded for a run to Liverpool Street.
More of the same followed, with 321432 and 321338 being my transport to Romford.

My intention was to wait twenty-five minutes for another pair back but as is so often the case I got distracted.
Dud 317887 was working the Upminster shuttles and I decided a dud unit was the ideal way to get a shack that had intrigued me for a while.
It’s only a mile and a bit to Emerson Park and if it was a required unit I would have been tempted to stay on to Upminster for the mileage.
No such worries here and so the only intermediate station on the line was roped in.

I love the rural look of this location:
EMU 317887_2016.09.09_2_Emerson Park by Phil Wood, on Flickr

Obviously I had missed the 321s I had planned on getting and didn’t fancy a fester so it was the first thing South, which was dud 315838 leading required 315859.
These were taken to Liverpool Street.

A couple of Shenfield line shacks were now on my agenda.
Winners 315849 & 315856 took me to Goodmayes and they were followed by 315860 & 315837 to Brentwood.

315860, with 321316 in the background, approaching Goodmayes:
EMU 315860_2016.09.09_1_Goodmayes_& 321316 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

As is my usual practice I then did the same two sets back south, riding in the unit I hadn’t used on the North-bound runs.

I’m not a massive fan of the lines out of Liverpool Street and fancied a change at this point.
315837 & 315860 were left behind at Stratford and I made my way round to Stratford High Level (DLR), leaving me just the Jubilee Line platforms to have cleared the numerous different sections of Stratford station.
93 & 81 were enjoyed all the way to their terminating station of Canary Wharf.
Further DLR scores followed as I took triple winners 02, 37 & 36 to Greenwich (DLR) and then the same three back to Cutty Sark.

Hello again:
DLR 36_2016.09.09_Greenwich_& 37 & 02 by Phil Wood, on Flickr

It seemed a bit daft to leave a short stretch of that line undone and so it was 38, 55 & 88 to Lewisham and then the same three back, after moving from 55 to 38, meaning 88 will have to wait to be ridden in.
I did these to West India Quay because I wanted to do the fantastically short run from there to Canary wharf – 10 chains.
24 and 59 did the deed and it only remained for me to leave 59, touch my Oyster on the reader and board 24 before I headed back to Stratford.

By this time I had achieved most of my rather vague aims for the day, only winning 317s eluded me, so it was into Liverpool Street on winner 315845, which was leading dud 315833.
I mooched up and down, looking for a likely candidate and my eyes happened upon a single unit working an Ely service.
317651 was duly enjoyed to Cheshunt before a pair, 317512 and 317658 arrived to whisk me back to Liverpool Street.

Rush hour was now taking hold and so I wanted to be away from the throng as soon as possible.
Nice winner 317509 provided me with the opportunity. 317509 had been my last member of the class required for sight and it was several years after seeing my penultimate one before I finally copped it at Cambridge in 2014.
This was a Cheshunt via Edmonton Green service and it was paired with dud 317881.
I stayed on these throughout to Cheshunt and arrived just after 18.00.

Another pair of 317s followed (my figures for these are starting to look almost respectable), with winner 317650 the rear unit of a pair working a Bishop Stortford to Stratford service.
317503 was on the front, not required but on our previous meeting it had gone by the number 317303, so it had been a while.
I did these to Stratford and began the journey home.

Unusually I wasn’t booked on the 20.05 off Kings Cross, as there had been no cheap tickets available, so I was on the 20.35.
This meant there was less stress on getting back although I do like to make sure I’m at the Cross in plenty of time as an hour early beats five minutes late when it comes to getting my train home.
With this in mind I had looked on RTT and seen there were several services from Stratford International to St Pancras between 19.00 and 19.30 and so I made my way there.

My final run on the DLR was provided by 131 & 152, naturally from Stratford Low Level to Stratford International.
I was prepared to wait a while for a winning 395 but I didn’t need to as the first one that arrive fitted the bill nicely.
This was 395018 and it took me from an enjoyable day to the chaos and frustration of Kings Cross.

I was inside the station by 19.20, a bit early but it gave me time to get some supplies.
I looked on RTT and it boldly stated that the 20.35 was on time and was already in the platform.
I mooched down and viewed the loco, 91130, which was nice as it sits on 980 miles, so would join the thousand-mile club.

Or not.

RTT might tell me that it’s on time, but the display on the station told a different story.
The 20.35 to Leeds was expected to depart at 21.10.
Bugger.
Obviously I was aware of the situation at Retford but was hoping that my train would be unaffected.
Either that or I would get some bonus 67 haulage through Lincolnshire.

I surmised that it was going to be a HST vice the 91 and the announcements backed this up as the repeated message was that the in-coming train had not yet arrived.
Annoyingly, my usual train, the 20.05, left on time.
Eventually the train was announced and everyone ran round.
As expected it was a HST, with the rear power car being 43307.
I had a reserved seat in coach M, a long way from the front, so I just didn’t have time to get the front power car.
Incredibly frustrating.

We actually left at 21.00, so only twenty-five late, although the diversion we were going to do around Retford would mean a much later than planned arrival.
The Wi-Fi wasn’t working and my signal was a bit intermittent but I did manage to fire off a quick posting to the TOPs request thread, although no reply as yet.
To make matters worse, I’ve done a bit of digging and found that 43307 was working with 43305 on Wednesday but 43302 on Saturday, so it could have been either.
If anyone can say definitively what it was with on Friday I would be most grateful.
The diversion didn’t even provide something different to see as it was dark :(
Arrival at Wakefield was at 23.51, some seventy-one minutes later than it said on my ticket.
Despite a rapid walk when I got off, I was still five coaches from the front when the train started moving, so I was unable to ID the front power car.

In conclusion, a very enjoyable day, bar the obvious, with no less than 32 requirements (16 mainline and 16 DLR) ticked off as well as 10 new shacks, all except three on the DLR.
I’m just 44 winners short of my target for year and with, hopefully, a few more winners (including a new class of loco) to come before September’s out I think I’ll do it :)

Aside from the farce getting home, and I hope you're claiming Delay Repay, that was quite a decent spin around London. I am reminded by your moves that I need far too many 321s to count on GA, and that I really, really must make an effort to get the numbers down. Sadly there isn't many opportunities left in 2016 to do so, and the money is not likely to be in vast quantities with the amount of stuff left to pay out for this year. I will go into detail on one of my own threads as and when things are confirmed of course.

A search on HSTgen on Yahoo Groups reveals no gen on the ECML that day I'm afraid, hope someone can come through for you on the TOPS Request Thread

Except the farce at the end of the day it sounds like a great time was had! The trams seem to love you this year...

Oh yes, the delay repay form has gone in.
I would have preferred to have been home on time, preferably with 91130 over the thousand mile mark, mind.

Oh well, thanks for looking.

Thanks.
It was a most enjoyable move, HST's continuing to bait me an obvious exception.
It's only a HST, but it still bugs me when I have gaps in my records.
If it had worked with 43305 on Wednesday and was still with it on Saturday then I'd be happy, but no.
I'm sure the East Coast HST fleet is conspiring against me :)

I'm surprised to see the 0713 off Wakey is your favourite service. It's consistently heaving, excluding school holidays. Much better to wait until the xx:28 IMO.

A productive and varied trip. Unlucky on the trip back, but the delay repay will come in handy. How come you don't like HST's? I much prefer them to 91's which I find rather boring.

Really? It's interesting how your experience differs from mine.
I do the 07.13 frequently and I've never known it even close to being full!
There were certainly plenty of seats available on Friday and as it doesn't stop after Wakefield no chance of being disturbed.
I dislike the 07.28 as I find it busier and it seems to be an HST these days!

RA Wakefield Westgate to London Kings Cross? Now that's the way to do it, unlike my East Coast moves next month. I'll be enduring a stopper from York to Peterborough, which I'm informed is booked for a 91. I'll be climbing the walls by Doncaster!

Like Iskra, I'd prefer an HST to a 91 all day, every day. I don't like the ride quality of a MK4!

A nice day in London there, much get myself down there before the year is out. Too much to do!

I do find, Tech, that the East Coast "stopping" services are more 91s than HSTs. I'm with 55013 on this matter though, I'd take a 91 over a HST.

Yep, I'm afraid that one is solid 91 (I've never seen it as anything else) :(.

At least you're getting an HST on 1E05 as that also used to be a fairly solid 91 worked service!

Good time in London had there! Just been down myself and even now had problems with the wires. Not quite as bad for me though, we were 22L into Newcastle tonight...

Coincidentally 43307+43302 took the family and me to the Smoke (via Swinderby) yesterday, not that that helps your query I'm afraid. On arrival at the Cross (60¾ minutes late) our train was the only one in the main line platforms, first time I've ever seen that.

I wonder if anyone's visited Emerson Park, Lake and Palmers Green on the same day?

Sorry, I missed this bit!
It's an historical thing, HSTs replaced much loco hauled stuff, including my beloved Deltics.
Back in the 80s most people disliked them and, although I have mellowed towards them, I can't quite shake off the feeling of disappointment when one appears, especially when I was hoping for a 91.
I've had twelve 91s for over a thousand miles and am hoping to get them all past that mark before they go, so when I miss out it's a bit annoying!

RA Wakefield Westgate to London Kings Cross?

Indeed yes, it's great :)

I don't mind the MK4s at all, to be honest. I agree that flyers beat all shacks services, though.

A nice day in London there, much get myself down there before the year is out. Too much to do!

Thanks.
I've another couple of train based soirees planned down there before the year's out.
I've also got a trip lined up with Mrs 13 - not train based obviously, but I'm hoping that it produces a couple of low mileage 91s.

Apart from the hassle due to the wires falling, sounded like a good day in London :)

It certainly was, I generally prefer going South of the river but this one hit the spot :)

Good time in London had there! Just been down myself and even now had problems with the wires. Not quite as bad for me though, we were 22L into Newcastle tonight...

Hopefully it'll all be sorted by Saturday when the wife and I head down to the smoke.

Bah! Will there be no end to my torment?
It looks like I'll never know what was on the front.

I wonder if anyone's visited Emerson Park, Lake and Palmers Green on the same day?

One for a common man to do?
If anyone manages it, there should be a fanfare :)

Why? Do they all have some weird thing in common?
Don't think so. They're just a pretty oddball selection to me.

I've visited Falmer, Cheam and Exeter St Thomas all in one day. That's as random as I can get.

Another super-group move in London could be - Bruce Grove, Clapton & Baker Street.

Well, Dave87016 (a beast of a loco, by the way, my first 87 past 1000 miles) has kindly informed me via the TOPs request thread that it was 43302 leading on my way home, so I'm very grateful to him for the gen.

Cracking write ups there, the European jaunt sounds like a very dramatic holiday! Although I'm puzzled as to why your driver turned round when he was near CDG...

Glad you had a good time on the DLR and TFL Rail - I'm very tempted to bash the DLR before I move away from the capital!

Thanks.
The taxi turned round because he had taken us to the wrong airport, we needed to be at Beauvais and had told him this but clearly in all the excitement he had forgotten and headed to Charles De Gaul instead.

I really enjoyed my spin on the DLR and am looking forward to my next visit.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Mrs 13 and I visited that there London yesterday.
Not a cranking trip, obviously, but good stuff could still be achieved on the rails.

We get Tesco Clubcard vouchers through our energy supplier and with the boost system meaning we could increase the value fourfold this means good days out can be had for no more than the cost of our transport.

I had booked us on the 0740 from Shipley to Kings Cross.
We could have done it from Forster Square but it’s free parking at Shipley :)
I was hoping for a sub thousand mile 91 so was delighted when 91125 proved to be our traction.

Our chariot arrives:
91125_2016.09.17_Shipley by Phil Wood, on Flickr

By the time we got to London 91125 had become the thirteenth member of the club.
It was now down to the underground and we went in 24308 for the run to Tower Hill.
We’ve both done The Tower before, but not for many years.
In my case, about forty.
The next few hours were spent soaking up our country’s history but I won’t bore you with the details.

The wall carvings made by 16th Century prisoners are fantastic:
DSCN0642 by Ruth Wood, on Flickr

After leaving The Tower we made the short journey to Tower Bridge.
We made our way up literally hundreds of steps to reach the high level walkways.
These both have a portion of glass flooring to enable you to stand and look down on the road traffic below.
We were very lucky, our visit perfectly aligned with the bridge being opened to allow a fleet of ships through.
A very interesting angle from which to view this procedure.

See:
DSCN0866 by Ruth Wood, on Flickr

Proof that I stood on the glass:
DSCN0893 by Ruth Wood, on Flickr

After this, highly recommended, visit (if you go, don’t forget the old engine rooms which are a short walk from the bridge and included in the admission price) we headed back to the rails and boarded 22410 for a run to a new shack!

We changed from the Circle Line to the Northern at Embankment and did 52659 to Leicester Square and a visit to Pizza Hut.
We then made our way back to Kings Cross via another winning station, doing 53510 to Warren Street then the Victoria Line, in 13047.

After a hugely enjoyable day it was only fitting that another 91 on less than a thousand miles should take us home.
It would have been fitting for that to happen, but sadly it didn’t.
91106 has been in the club for some time, but at least it wasn’t a HST :)

We arrived back at Shipley more or less on time at 22.10 and a great day was over with.
An excellent day out, with a few rail bonuses chucked in, can’t be bad.

Nicely done on getting your desired 91 mileage up in both directions :) Sounds like a fun day, Tower Bridge especially sounds good. Is it rather chingy though?
