Let's get back to the real reason for this topic.

Sometimes situations arise that none of us like, so if 50007 gets a repaint back into BR Blue & named 'Hercules', the best we can all do is to remember the happy times she was 50007 'Sir Edward Elgar' in GWR Green.

If she does get mainline registered, where should she go on her maiden run & which other 50 would she be paired with?

They should just paint one side green and the other blue, then there'd be no more arguments.........

47s are probably hated, as so many were built & always turned up when you wished for some other class of loco to turn up.

As a big fan of 50035's Loadhaul look, I'm crossing my fingers for InterCity or something. There's 15-ish of them in preservation, why not a little experimentation?

47's are only hated by the misguided. To improve reliability of future railtours may I suggest 50007 be paired with a 47 or some other Sulzer powered MONSTER!<D

47's are probably hated by the same people that don't like bands when they become popular but loved them prior to that..........I ask you how many people classed the 47's....Oh wait a minute maybe that's it it's probably much easier to class a loco of which only fifty were ever built!<D<D

I hated the Class 47s because they were brought onto the LSWR main line to supplement the depleted stock of steam locos back in 1967. To have one hauling the last Bournemouth Belle was a disgrace. There had been talk of using Duchesses instead so every time I saw one I was left lamenting for what might have been.

But then back in the early 90s (I think) I found myself waiting at Harpenden station to see one go through when they were used on the two or so remaining loco hauled trains out of St Pancras,

How times change.

The same people who do not like the 47 are mostly the same who dislike the popular 37 which is my personal favorite UK diesel. Yes, The 37 does not have the power of the newer units. Granted some are over 50 years old now as are some of the 47 diesels. But these are some of the first diesels to surplant steam and at the time they were state of the art. Just as the class 70 is now, dispite the 70 having so many problems at the present time.

Indeed. Although how anybody could take an active interest in a humming, ugly yank tank I have no idea; even as a relative young'un I am completely indifferent to the 66/67/70 breed and probably also the new DRS jobbies when they turn up (88s or something?), though I understand they are from not quite so far afield? Of course, a flaming 70 will always attract a certain degree of interest!

Ultimately though, it is each to their own, and quite rightly so. Of course we are all bias towards what we grew up with, worked with or just took an active interest in at whatever time. For me though, I'll happily watch a 37, 47, 50 or whatever so long as there is noise and smoke! Nothing built in the past decade or so can ever come close to the grin-inducing, tingly effects of a roaring 60s monster shaking the foundations at full throttle! Amen :D

class 37 has a superb RA ...it can go literally anywhere on the network, hence they are still a survivor on the Network..network rail use em...same as 31s, 20's

Class 50 - Nice Locos - love looking at them as they are imposing, they say look at me...were they ever placed in Inter city executive paint ?? I dont recall it being done...

Personally The 31 is my favourite hauler...small, friendly bits of kit, that once upon a time did most of the trip work, P-way trains, a hero that is forgotten...

as said class 47 was hated by the gricers as the fleet went everywhere on the network...not a bad bit of kit, they are still a performer, and its great to see hear and see one..

Class 59 became popular because of their tiny fleet, but because it was a specialist private fleet it was very well looked after...and hardly ever failed....even now...

The last of the BR fleets - the 60, Good lumps of metal with lots of grunt at the rail....they had lots of bedding in issues...once sorted...nothing could touch em

The new breeds -the 66, 67, 70, at the moment they are not liked...because of the same disfavour gricers had with class 47, When the 66 fleet winds down in 20/30 years they will become loved....

If you recall Ed Burkhardt had when he took on british freight a large fleet of knackered locos and wagons...he found a supplier that could give him a solution - a lower powered version of the 59...what choice did he have...spend Millions overhauling a life expired fleet or for half the cost of an overhaul buy a new one...I know what id do Buy a new one..

FACT - it was cheaper for Intercity to operate one HST from euston to Holyhead than to have a 47 swapped on to the head of the service at Crewe...thats the economics of the job

Finally GE class 70....Personal opinion...they look BIG...out of place on british Steelwork....they have plenty of Grunt at rail head..so they will continue to be workers, and will I suspect become a serious player..they have some issues with wanting to be Kettles....this will be sorted...I recall Class 55 sometimes have the ability to want to be Kettles...I like em as they are amercian built...and they have the old ww2 YANKS ARE HERE look to em..

Things have also changed with engines..they are more efficient...no longer simple idiesel njected lumps of grunt powering an alternator, they are cleaner, quieter, (drivers will disagree when driving at the wrong end of a 66) things have to change...

purely my opinions

atlasduff47, you won't get many Hoover bashers on a Railtour, if they have to suffer having a Duff in the consist, why can't you simply have 2 50s in multiple!

I don't agree Nightstar, I don't like 47s, but love 37s!

In all seriousness I don't mind what the traction is as long as it is pre 1985, as I am a victim of my age. Give me a good honest diesel with plenty of noise and clag and I will be happy! I too like 37's I used to love watching them thunder passed when I was in the signal box with my old man, I particularly remember the split domino headcode variety. Don't tell anyone.........but the hoovers were good too!

I can't think of anything better than a pair of 37s or 50s making an absolute racket on a Railtour. If you want something different on a Railtour, why not have 40145 & 50007?

A 47 will get you there, but have always felt they are underpowered.

Not in real life. They were BR blue, large logo blue, three varieties of NSE, green, two tone green, Railfreight General, 'Dutch' engineer's yellow/grey, a version of Loadhaul black/orange, 'streamlined Coronation' maroon/gold and a few variations of them.

That would please the English Electric mob but what about the Sulzerites? If you would really baulk at a 47 why not throw a peak up front with the 50.

47's underpowered compared to a 40.......!?;)

I have never said I am a fan of the 47. The 37 is my cup of tea. However, From my perspective the 47 is a good choice of power for aidng the older 37 class with the heavy Nightstock train if the consist had become reality and not the huge flop of the Euro Tunnel project that it became. Not too many locomotive are capable of passenger trains the size and weight of the Mark4 Nightstock cars.

If I was running the Nightstar service I would have the 12 Class 37/6 locomotives completely overhauled from top to bottom.

6 Class 47 diesels rewired for through ETS and MU operation with the Class 37's and possibily the class 73 thunderbirds Eurostar had.

Personally if Nightstar had ever gotten off the ground I doubt the 37s (or any older traction like the 47s) would have lasted all that long and would have been replaced with more modern traction relatively quickly.

But we are getting a little OT. ;)

If we're being sensible (sensibly off-topic), would it be a tag-on batch of 67s, maybe?

Personal picks for Nightstar. Let the bashing begin! <D

If the original class 37/6 fleet was not up to the task how about this alternate fleet?

British Rail Class 97/3- Rebuilt Class 37 Engines.

British Rail Class 57- Rebuilt Class 47 Engines.

New Class 67 Diesels.

Vossloh Eurolight (UK Light Version)

Vossloh Euro 4000- The big Daddy!

British Rail Class 68

Or any of the following diesel electric versions.

Voith_Maxima (Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive)

Prima 2, Traxx and Vectron diesel electrics.

Surely one of the new build locomotives would have the power and be capable of traveling the older lines Nightstar was to operate over. Heck, Maybe one of the new builds could cope with the crazy ETS demands of the stock as well! :p

I don't think EMD/Cat or GE offeres at present a export model for passenger trains?

All I can say about 50007 I'm gutted and sad to hear they are going to change it I've stood next to it in the late 1980s while I was working at reading station it's the only 50 in that green I loved to see it when it came to reading and through tilehurst station why can't they just leave it as it is :(
