My guess is, seeing that it's a 377/2 unit (only 377/2s have the PTSO car, 2nd car from the left), I reckon the extra car is either a standard trailer, or a motor. Either way, it's either on a test run for the car after having some sort of maintenance or checks at either Brighton Works or Selhurst, as the 377/2s are split between Brighton & Selhurst, or it's a stock transfer, which I reckon is an easier way doing it like this, as it saves having to hire in a loco (Southern AFAIK have their own translator vehicles, or whatever they're called) to transfer the unit.

All 377s have a PTSO car, but only /(2,5)s have pans in the recess. And it's hard to tell whether that 377 has a pan or not, but in case you're wondering it's definitely not a /5 as they bear the FCC livery.

How can you even see that it has the FCC branding on it?

Locos? Why use a loco? When a 377 can toe another 377 on its own no problem. A loco would only be needed if the unit was going into diesel only sections.

It cant be a 377/5 as the picture was taken in Lovers Lane some time ago and they haven't released the first one yet!

Ive not managed to find anything on a 5 car 377 at all. Im like the curious cat :)

A 4-car 377 had a crash earlier this year, that required repair or maintainence to three of her cars. The fourth car (one of the middle cars, I think the trailer) was not damaged and remained at lovers walk. It was briefly used to make up a 5-car 377, but for some reason it didn't work out and was removed a week or two later. Both trains are now back to their original formations.

The fifth car was from 377424 which was damaged in a collision with a tractor. Search for the unit number on the "UKmodernEMU" yahoo group for more info.

Thank you very much!

UPDATE:

Thanks to thelem for that information.

Basically worked out the unit 377 439 is in the following formation and most of the numbers of the units invloved.

DMCO - TSO - MSO - MSO - DMCO

73839 - 78639 - ? - ? - 73439

Now the two MSO are but Im not sure in what order

377 439 - 78639
377 424 - 78824

Sometimes the the system tells you your in coach 9 of 8!

It doesn't sound like it went into public service from what Ive read tho I cant confirm this.
