Hi

Is there a way to check in advance if your lner train is a 5 , 9 or 10 service ?

Thanks
If it's the same day, Real Time Trains live.

If you're looking ahead... have a look at what formed the train on previous days. That won't guarantee, but it will give a good indication.

The seat map on LNER or TrainSplit will also indicate.

Edinburgh/Aberdeen/Inverness are pretty much always 9s.

Anything else varies.

I assume that a trial booking on LNER, bringing up their seat map, would reveal planned formations.

From my limited observations, 10 car Azuma's tend to be on the Leeds and various West Yorkshire extensions, although there a still quite a few 9 car services along there. Everything heading to York and beyond is a 9 car.

Just a few other pointers - exceptions of course exist.

London - Lincoln / Middlesbrough are 5 car
London - Edinburgh (and beyond) are generally 9 car (a few 10 car exceptions exist - I have used the 1730 London - Edinburgh as a 10 car)
London - Leeds (onwards - Harrogate) seem to be all bets are off. Harrogate can be a 10 car as far as Leeds dropping to 5 car, or 5 cars throughout (or even 9 car in the case of the 1733)
London - Hull is normally a 9.

Try buying a ticket on the LNER website (sorry mods!) and go through to reservations. That will show you if it's a 5, 9 or 10 Azuma, or if it's a 225. Then cancel the booking.

Remember though that any small perturbation on the railways could result in all bets being off...

5 cars have sometimes been running EDB to KGX though I’ve noticed, 10 cars too sometimes. Very rarely, but I think there was a period when they couldn’t get enough 9 cars due to hitachi maintenance or something earlier this year?

All Edinburgh Mon - Sat are booked 9 car. Sunday one 10 car set to/from Edinburgh.

All KGX - NCL Mon to Sat are 9 car with exception of Sunday when some 5/10 car sets.

KGX to LdS Mon - Sun mix of 5/9/10.

As others have stated LNER website shows set formation, easy way to check, make a seta reservation, it will show you what the set is formed of

That 5-car to Aberdeen earlier in this year was very much the exception, due to a sudden temporary shortage of 9-car Bi-mode units.

10 car sometimes run to Edinburgh when there are diversions along the Durham coast or via Carlisle. This is so a bi-mode set can provide the traction when not under the wires.
