Hello everyone

Today I noticed one of GBRF's 73s hauling 4VEP 3417 past Millbrook today. I'm assuming it was on its way to the Swanage Railway, but could anyone clarify why it was on the move today?

Makes a change to finnaly see it going to somewhere safer! Since its nice warm and dry coverd storage in Eastleigh Works, it seems to have ended up in open storage in and on East Grimsted station and viaduct, and Tonbridge Yard... Not really the best locations for the last remaining mainline registerd 3rd rail Unit, and i have to admit, im supprised that it hasnt yet had a vist from Mr Chav! Or, that after all its time out in the open, that it hasnt fallen apart yet with water ingress - VEPs wernt the dryest of units!... :|

Its been stored at Bournemouth before, during the last lot of tip trains - indeed it would've got back there quicker but it seems there was a paperwork issue keeping it at Tonbridge for the past few weeks.

Damn the people who won't let us travel in it on the the mainline.

Indeed. It's ridiculous. All this "health and safety" nonsence nowadays wrapping us all up in cotton wool.

It's one thing that they aren't allowed to be used on normal scheduled services on the mainline network which joe public use. But at least let us rail enthusiasts travel on them if we wish to, on railtours!

It's more backside-covering than actual safety concerns. "What if" is how things work nowadays, mainly due to cheap lawyers rather than an increased risk. A 4-VEP storming down the SWML is still safer than being on the street; the only difference is that the railway has a duty of care for you while you're on the train, but on the street you are on your own!

That said, I've read that the restrictions on MK1s are due to be relaxed. I hope this is true, as it would be nice to travel on a slam door EMU on the mainline again. I suspect the only reason the restrictions were ever introduced was to speed up the withdrawal of slam door EMUs rather than real safety reasons! ;)
