DRS came unstuck yesterday on the WCML with their choice not to use electric traction. The failure between Carlisle and Penrith caused significant delays.

Can you elaborate how the specific choice to use diesel caused this to happen, and how it would not have happened with an electric locomotive?

It is generally the case that electric locomotives fail less, and also DRS have the 88s which are significantly newer than the diesel 66 which was used on this service.

Utter tripe. Log on to Real Time Trains and check out last night’s 4M48 which had an 88 on it……..same issue as 4M82…….

Out of interest do you know what same issue caused both the 4M48 and 4M82 failures?

Assuming the diesel was a 68 the the cause will be trying to put more power through 4 axles that results in trying to apply more TE than the speed (adhesion decreases with speed) and local adhesion conditions at that point in time can support.
Freightliner with 2x90s and applying less power through each axle aren't slipping to a stand.

The problem is too few powered axles.

Openrail showed that a cancelled TPX service at Carlisle was due to a "diesel loco failure" hence the original post. I don't know where the "slipped to a stand" info was from but agree that a 66 and certainly 2x90 are much less likely to have adhesion problems than a 68/88.

Carping on about (increased) use of diesels over this route is very tiresome for some but their performance (or lack of) does cause delays even in ideal weather conditions.

Most of the delay to 4M48 was due to it being held in Kingmoor Loop, once it became clear the preceding train with 66425 was in trouble.
