4L21 wrong-routed at Chippenham Junction (11/04/2026)

4L21 Tinsley - Felixstowe failed at Chippenham Junction (near Bury St Edmunds) last night, and has just got back on the move 300+ mins late.

However, the line from Bury - Ipswich is now shut for engineering works. So where it's going to go, I'm unsure. Can anyone help?

Looks like it is currently heading back to Ely

It hasn’t failed (I know that’s what the online systems might says). It was sent on a route that was blocked by engineering work and required to be run round and wrong direction moves.

Journey check just says cancellations until further notice. Suppose there’s no easy way to rescue it.

That's very misleading from NR & GA then, which both state 'broken down freight train'. Considering how bad GA was at managing the broken down train at Broxbourne last night, the customer service has been very lacking of recent.

Operational incident might have been better but then you’ll get a multitude of questions as to what it actually is. Easier to just state it as broken down as effectively blocking the line.

Not good for any Ipswich Town fans from Bury who were hoping to travel via Ely for the local Derby. Even one of the Cambridge-Norwich relief trains has been cancelled too. The others and EMR are going to be dreadfully crowded.
