455s in Southampton, Monday

[Techniquest]

Hi all,

On Monday at about 1510 I saw 5721 and 5912 go through Southampton Central towards Eastleigh, coming from the Totton direction.

Does anyone know what on Earth these units were doing down south? I have a short video clip on my camera, no time for photos as I'd only just turned around in time, but I'm baffled as to the reason for them out of London.

Move is 5B39Q 10+10 WimPk - Bomo and 5B40Q 13+52 Bomo WimPk, Both as required if the headcodes haven't changed!

Oh right. Never heard of that working before. I'd have thought Wimbledon's depot crew would do that work. Evidentally I would be wrong.

Still looks the most bizarre thing ever to me. I'll try and upload the video clip later.

Bournemouth has been working on the 458s recently too, and prior to that they did the 450 HC conversions.

458s is the DfT mods for the toilets etc isn't if im not mistaken?

Fair enough then, it shows I know absolutely bugger all about SWT stuff.

At the end I say it's "very rarely seen in Southampton Central". Please ignore that comment now as I was a) very tired after being awake nearly all night on t'internet and b) I was unaware of these workings until now.

That move has run for the past couple of years. Yes it probably is WM crew, as there is the return working as well.

Like I say, my attention has been very much not on SWT's area so I know nothing of what they do when it comes to works.

I mentioned recently that I saw an ECS 3x450 move, heading Up from Southampton.

Did it not apply the post? Sorry - Cudln't find ECS move for around that time for one for Waterloo - there is a 1656 from Havant which is a 12 car with no working from waterloo so would asume it was that one (there doesn't appear to be a down service).

There is a 12x450 ECS move from Northam to Havant not long after 1500 arriving in Havant at 1550. It could also be an ECS move from Northam to Waterloo for a return in the peak.

The units could have been sent out the west end of Northam, then reversed at Central. Makes me wonder why some money could be earned on these trips by carrying pax.

I had 8030 with 8004 the other day and I noticed 8030's First Class had been refurbished..I had difficulty getting into the cab as the first class seat backs were bloody huge.Also fitted is plug sockets for laptops etc.

I know 455's do make it down to Bournemouth occasionally.I would love to work one of these or a 458 set down there.:???:

Think you'l find bomo trips are wim pk guys, I know they always used to. More likely to be the havant move as there is no ECS from Northam in the waterloo A+Ds in the evening as 12 cars around the time it would be for that trip. (Unless it was an amendment:grin You may find that the train is probably DOO and picks up the guard from havant or en-route. Yeh I know its silly realy, but alot of it is to doo with hours. ECS moves also have the possibilty of being diverted or re-booked to start else where - a service would have to start from that location every time or face penalty fares for canel/late running. There is also the possibility that there may not be a path for a service train but an ECS usually runs quicker so could be fitted in, and it can be looped etc where necessary.

Don't know if its relevant but Bournemouth do work on 159's or they have done in the past.They also did some 153's for East Midland

Waterloo drivers could easily work it although we don't sign Bournemouth Depot.
