I apologise if I'm wrong, or being an idiot (), but I do believe that I saw a couple of SWT 455s at Ilford TMD on Monday evening. Would anyone have any idea as to why they were there, how they got there, and even whether they were 455s at all? All I had to go on was the livery, which looked very SWT 455 –like, and also the body, which also looked very SWT 455 –like.

TIA ;)

Why Ilford though? Shouldn't they have been sent to Eastleigh, or is this work being done by Bombardier?

The work is being undertaken by Bombardier (I think) at Ilford instead of Chart Leacon/Eastleigh.

Don't ask me why ... I only know this from gen emails!

After the various post privatisation sales Alstom took on Eastleigh, so IIRC the SWT 455s always used to go to Chart Leacon, as that was Bombardier's designated works for SR units.

Bombardier have now consolidated onto one site and use Ilford - these aren't the first SWT 455s to go there.

owww, Ive wondered about this for a long time now. Go past ilford depot atleast twice a day, and ive seen that red SWT train in there (or might might have been another one) for ages but never knew why it was there. I also recall seeing a FCC train in there and C2C train and about a week ago, I noticed 3 wrexham and shropshire Mk3 carriages there too.
Anyone know what the wrexham and shropshire carriages were there for? Is NXEA taking them on?

You are mixing up the roles of the depot and the works.

Ilford depot supports NXEA, Ilford works is a Bombardier facility that happens to be in Ilford. (I guess pretty much colocated - I'm not aware of the detailed site layout) So the presence of any particular unit or carriage is not necessarily anything to do with NXEA.

For comparison, when damaged SWT 444s and 450s go to Kilmarnock it doesn't actually mean Scotrail are interested in them...

Doesn't surprise me,when I was based there in the early 80's they did specalist work there.I think they did asbestos removal (and other work) though obviously they don't do that now.

I seem to remember they refurbished the 442's there for SWT..(or whoever owned the 442's at that time)

Yeh, your right kind of, I never really think of it as two seperate things. But the wrexham and shorpshire carriages were on the road where the NXEA Mk3s usually sit when they're waiting for tyre turning. Thats why I wondered if they had anything to do with NXEA. But yeh, whenever I see other companys trains at Ilford, they are in the Ilford works, bit.... I think its labled 'Shop B'
