Aparently this is the reason why the 442's never came out to play on Wedensday:-

Don't forget the DfT has the final say on who has what (through lease underwriting) and seeing as this sort of thing could potentially put a spanner in the works for their 'plan' for GatEx and Southern, DfT may not be to keen on it...

I'm curious as to whether this approach to SWT was made before or after the announcement regarding the GatEx franchise changes was made. I suspect the former, and that the offer may be withdrawn seeing as they have some potential full rate customers on the horizon.

Pity that the lovely buffet area would go! It was the safe haven for me when I commuted to Waterloo years ago off-peak when you could get a seat and have room to stretch.

When did you used to commute? I probably checked your ticket if it was between 1988 and 1998 ......... took me that long to get through

Mind you - I used to hate the smoke in the buffet lounge and walk through most of the time.

I'd mainly work evenings - 18.55 up and 21.55 or 22.55 back down. Avoid the morning commuters who are really miserable apart from the sociable ones in the buffet or playing cards.

Then again - you could double my wages, I still wouldn't commute.

This is brilliant news!

Also, having spent the Easter weekend negotiating the Portsmouth Main Line, it really does seem like the 444's are perfect for that line, just as the 442's are perfect for the Weymouth line. I seriously hope the 442's make a comeback :D

I saw a 442 move today! 10 coach train (ie, 2 units) moving under its own power (albeit slowly) passing Swaythling station about half past 1?

Anyone got any details on this one?

Well - it looks as if Southern are going to use 12 on the London - Brightons according to Modern Traction (in WH Smith's library).

Wonder if the livery will suit them?

My source seems to think that initially all the 442 will be required for the Southern Gatwick Express Service. 12 are to be considerably upgraded, Possibily even fitted with a new traction package. Think the buffets and snugs are to go and the trains are to be fitted with Gatwick Express style luggage racks and the seating thinned out. The other units will be required as cover during the upgrade.

Apparently Siemens may have to fund extra Desiros to comply with their SWT contract.

Picture I took way back in 1996 of a Norwegian 442 at Oslo Station

Latest news I have is Ma' Scanlon still at Bomo with guys from Bombadier, Derby crawling over her fiddling with her wires:p  could this be something to do with multiple working for Hull Trains* I wonder?

Cheers

Hentis

* Now see how many times I get misquoted by other sites in saying that Bombadier are out fitting Ma' Scanlon for Hull Trains!!
