When the 442s used to run on the pdl express they were only allowed to run as a ten car set, can anyone clarify why. And also how was the problem of short platforms dealt with, was it a uds similar to the desiros?

Does PDL stand for Portsmouth Direct Line?

If so the 442s were used in and 10 car formations for a number of years.

When the class 442's worked on the Portsmouth Direct, the fast services called Woking, Guildford, Haslemere, Petersfield, Havant, Fratton, Portsmouth & Southsea, Portsmouth Harbour. At all stations except Fratton had full length platforms, so all doors where released at these stations, and only the doors in the front 5 coaches at Fratton. Announcements where made at stations and on train advising such. However this didn't stop some prat want to punch my lights out at Portsmouth & Southsea because the doors didn't open at Fratton and he had heard no announcements (use of a Walkman didn't help) and I dared to ask him which pascom he had pulled, at Portsmouth & Southsea due to the fact that the doors in the front 5 coaches had activated, and not the rear 5 coaches, never found out if it was a unit fault or an error made by the guard!

Not sure where you heard this but the following were booked single 442's in 2003:

Monday - Friday

1017/1047 Portsmouth Harbour - Waterloo via Guildford
1208/1238/2200/2220 Waterloo - Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford

Saturday

2038/2208 Waterloo - Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford

It would be the same as they do now with the 444s, Unit Deselect (UDS I do believe).

A couple of weeks ago I got a 10 car 442 to Brighton from Clapham Jct platform 15 and only the front 5 car's doors opened. So just like a desiro.

So just to reiterate, they have UDS ;)
