What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I am planning a 442 crankfest in October, where I will be concentrating on the south of Gatwick Airport extensions to Brighton and Eastbourne.

Assuming the entry on Wikipedia is correct, there are a total of 24 units in the fleet. According to my calculations, I have worked out there are 6 Brighton (reduced later in the evening to 4) diagrams and 1 Eastbourne. Furthermore, I have calculated that there are 6 diagrams for the standard non-stop every 15 minutes London Victoria - Gatwick Airport service.

In total and using the assumption that it is single units, this works out at 13. Does anybody know if there are any diagrams that see pairs of 442s coupled up? Also, if I was to go to East Croydon for a run to Clapham Junction on the 442s during late evening the following day, would they be the same ones I landed the previous day?

I was at East Croydon for an hour or so around lunchtime a couple of days ago and every GatEx was 10 car. I dont think you'll see any singles for most of a typical weekday, the Brighton extensions will be doubled up as well.

They are also used on a couple of weekday peak services (all 10 car) to /from London Bridge.

Look at the Frequently Requested Diagrams Thread at the top of this board - it lists the diagrams.

Interesting. I've not used them since the May timetable change but I know all weekday ex VIC services between 1430 and 1715 were 5 car except for the 1630 which came in as a single unit and had a unit added in VIC.

I'm planning a bash on them this coming Monday afternoon. A Vic-gatwick Round trip, then over to London Bridge for the Eastbourne.

Just checked the latest CWNs on UKModernEMU and they vary over the middle of the day, some are 5 and some 10 - so what I saw (between about 1200 and 1300) must have just been luck of the draw...

It doesn't show unit diagrams, to be completely correct, it just shows times of departures from Victoria, Brighton, and Eastbourne.

Many of the entries in the FRD sticky are not really 'diagrams' in the normal sense. That definitely isn't intended as a criticism, the info that you need to catch the trains is all there.

Indeed - I should have said departure list rather than diagrams.

I took the 1823 Eastbourne from London Bridge on Friday. This was worked by 2x442 that had worked, in service, as 1B44, the 1706 from Brighton. So is this Brighton to London Bridge service a regular turn for 442s? It's not in the FAQ sticky thread so could it have been a one-off?

It is now a regular working since the last diagram change, previously it came ECS from Streatham Hill.

Thanks very much for the above info.

I have previously worked out the diagrams, but am unsure if they still apply now or not. I'll post them below for you to check, or for you to send them to me if possible.

Gatwick Airport 1804 Haywards Heath 1815 (1732 VIC 1849 BTN 2007 VIC 2119 BTN 2237 VIC)
Haywards Heath 1827 Hassocks 1834 (1744 VIC ECS to GTW)

Haywards Heath 1907 Wivelsfield 1911 (To EBN)

Gatwick Airport 1954 East Croydon avoid RDH 2010 (1814 VIC 1927 BTN ECS to Stewarts Lane)
East Croydon 2027 Clapham Jct 2036 (1802 VIC 1949 BTN 2107 VIC 2219 BTN)
Clapham Jct 2043 East Croydon 2053 (1757 LBG 1919 BTN 2037 VIC 2149 BTN 2307 VIC)
East Croydon 2057 Clapham Jct 2106 (1844 VIC 2019 BTN 2137 VIC)

The times in parentheses are the departure times from origin. The above 7 diagrams were from the FRD thread, and I used the RTT website to work them out.

It would be appreciated if these remain the same since the change referred to in the post above.

Hi,

I have checked each of the above services and they are all correct. Also, they are all formed of 10 coaches.
If you need any further information, please don't hesitate to ask!

What forms 1B44 at Brighton?! It appears to be this but what forms this is a TL train on a Lovers Walk diagram. Are these also 442 operated?

442401 is currently in the repair shed at Selhurst on 18 road.

Yes, as acg5324 said, the 442 units that form 1B44 start on a Lovers Walk diagram to Brighton where they then do a run to Victoria and back.
I have never known the 442s to run on any Thameslink diagrams!

Richard :)

Do you know the reason behind the repair? It seems a bit odd that this 442 is being repaired at Selhurst Depot as they are normally diagrammed into Stewarts Lane or, failing that, Lovers Walk.

We do get them a fair bit for different things.
