It is not cheap so perhaps they just had some spare in the shed. As you say, it's random.

As above, I find it a very odd excuse to be honest as the timeframe between said ‘incident’ would have occurred during turns when it was stabled at Laira. As GWR’s other power cars have been showing similar damage over the last few months, I would attribute it more to poor paint preparation causing the paint not to adhere to the fibreglass (and filler, lots and lots of filler!) front properly, likely exasperated by cleaning chemicals during the washing phase. It’s not uncommon for such an occurrence to occur! It also wouldn’t require the whole cab to be repainted either!

Otherwise… Laira would have some very odd vandals targeting specific parts of HST Power cars (the front fibreglass valances)!

It's nice to see, the IC Exec stock berthed at Crewe always looks especially good. I've noticed the quality of applied retro liveries has also improved considerably since the blue/yellow applied to 43002 several years back. That did not look particularly well done even when seen from halfway down a platform.

Agreed, this looks fantastic, I was never a fan of 43002 but seeing this is really quite impressive.

I think the chances this was vandalism are remote. It was clearly an error of some sort that has occurred during the maintenance process. Why would a vandal target that one power car. Cant say I've ever experienced trespass on Laira either.

Both the original incarnation of 43002 & 185 weren't great. Both used full height vertically placed vinyls, overlapped on each other. Both also seemed to suffer of the bodies being done first before reaching the cabs - which was worse on 185 due to the intercity red stripe. 002 in it's second and final incarnation had the vinyls replaced with much larger ones, this time placed horizontally - which thankfully doesn't look too noticeable unless you are looking at it close up!

I can also confirm that I was informed by the staff there that it was an Intentional act of vandalism.

Also those photos are inside Laira, they were taken after the first vandalism, as of yet I haven’t heard anything about a second attack.

It is worth noting that I was not informed of the location of the attack. Whilst I was there I noticed a full XC set with 43208 on one end and a missing power car on the other, which I would suggest is the set it was removed from. The next day 43207 and 43208 were on the set together.

Also of note is the way the paint thinner was spread over the windscreen. If this was inside Laira you’d have to be able to put an enormous amount of force into throwing a can of paint thinner that high. The paint thinner in those photos impacted on the cab roof, hence the paint across the windscreen.

I’d suggest that it is likely to have been carried out from an area higher than the track, such as a bridge or bank.

EDIT: Just noticed that I didn’t publish the photos of the windscreen…
maybe I’ll do that in the next video?

I would have thought good quality paint after curing, would be able to cope with splashes of thinners. Unless of course it was a good splashing of the stuff

They did say thinner and explicitly stated that it was an act of vandalism, however there is a possibility that paint thinner was confused with paint stripper. I’d suggest that it was a particularly strong formula of paint thinner, or even diluted paint stripper.

A quick glance at the repainted loco seems to reveal that they’ve done a better job with the white line the second time - less wiggly around the curves.

As I previously described, in that photo you can see the smears on the windscreen. They’d already repainted the roof and stripped the lower front when I was there.

Hyperbole alert! It’s only the paint - in the context of railway vehicles that is minor damage.

No this is not hyperbole, I didn’t state it as a fact and I didn’t say the power car itself was damaged.

I said that I thought they would scrap it because of the fact that the HSTs are so old, and likely going to be withdrawn in the next few years.

Also “They“ are the staff at CrossCountry, Laira, and Simms Newport.
