4 Car Working on Kirkby's

Slight rant sorry

Since when can Orrell No Longer have the rear unit open on Todmorden-Kirkbys Annoyed me as had to change unit at Pemberton just to warm up. i can remember a double 156 on the route being used with all 4 carriages used but when a 142/150 combination is used the rear units always is shut until Pem or Wigan? Very Odd Northern Lately and the Conductor didnt even get into the 2nd Carriage so i had to buy an off-peak ticket an hour after peak started at Victoria which aint fun!

At a guess, it'll be done to curb fare-dodging when there's no gangway between units.

Travelling towards Wigan, Rainford, Upholland and Orrell cannot accomodate more than a single 156. Local instructions state on 4 car formations rear set to be locked out of use on leaving Kirkby until Pemberton/Wigan (they will fit on platform at Pemberton but timetable allows for unlocking at Wigan).

Travelling towards Kirkby 4 cars will fit all platforms except Rainford where anything longer than2*142 will requirelocal door operation only but all 4 Cars should be in passenger use.

KIrkby branch doesnt need more than a single unit even at peak times, rarely more than 60 on, extra unit provides additional capacity between Wigan and Manchester.

Presumably in the unlikely event of a unit arriving full+standing @Pemberton, the guard can unlock there, and use the scheduled unlocking time @Wigan to make up the 2ish min. delay?

The Guard did this Tuesday at pem because the 142 was so bloody cold closely followed by me changing carriage at Wallgate
