Returning in to Euston this evening I noticed the Overground trains from Watford Junction. I was remembering that it used to be the Bakerloo line.

It made me think, where is the most northerly place on the 3rd rail system?

This came up a short time a go and has a few times before that.

Southport is the most northern place with third rail on the national network.

And the Glasgow subway is the furthest non standard gauge 3rd rail.

Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.

Still is the Bakerloo, but today, they turn back at Harrow and Wealdstone. Sure I read/heard that there's talk of cutting it back further - possibly Queens Park??

I've heard the Bakerloo might take over the LO service to Watford as LO will be re-routed towards Primrose Hill and not go into Euston

You've nailed it in one as to why the Bakerloo isn't getting extended any time soon- the line is well down the list for new stock.

New stock is hardly the reason a line isn't getting extended. Look at the JLE for proof of that.

Unlike the JLE, extending to Watford doesn't have a major regeneration project backing it, so it is currently fairly safe to say that the Bakerloo will not get any new stock (including anything cascaded) until currently envisaged replacement in the 2030s.

The Watford DC is a third rail island - if you were asking for the most northerly point on the main southern third rail network would be, I believe, North Pole junction on the West London Line (appropriately enough).

JLE is not proof of anything, the 1996TS fleet order was larger than required for the unextended, unupgraded line.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
If we count 4th rail, with the Croxley link the Watford DC/Bakerloo will cease to be an island- and if we count 4th rail, then the most northerly point of the contiguous DC network is Chesham.

(talking of "islands", Crossrail (and other links for GWML electrification?) will mean the Heathrow electrification will cease to be an AC "island".

You could start a similar thread to this tracing all the places where OHLE exists south of the Thames, or all the places where 3rd rail and OHLE meet.

You suggested the only reason why its not getting extended is because its not getting new stock, JLE example disproves your entire idea. JLE was planned to use old and new (initially) and the order made was decided upon later when all new fleet was chosen.

But its certainly not the case that the Bakerloo Line is being stopped extended just because the priorities of new fleet. Especially as Boris has been making sounds about extended the line. The truth is its not getting new stock because its future requirements are likely to change not the other way around as you suggested. Not that an optional extra for additional units can't be added into the tender anyway muting your suggestion.

I would imagine that the furthest North dedicate 3rd rail system is possible Mersey Rail

As was mentioned in post #2! I do wonder though, if there are any remnants of the Tyneside 3rd rail still in place (albeit disconnected, obviously)?

Pretty sure this is all gone now. There were a few places with telltale signs, but especially as we're now finally getting some of the older stretches of track replaced these are vanishing.

Incidentally, there are still a few old wooden NER buffer stops dotted around the network.

Eh? Cutting back to Queens Park would still mean it had trains between Baker Street and Waterloo!

Somewhere, not in London
Queens Park would mean that LOROL would need to provide an additional 6tph to Harrow and Weldstone and 3tph to Stonebrige Park / Willesden Junction to have a chance to keep up with peak demand, ergo, not gonna happen.

That very thought had occurred to me, after a reading of the postings in this thread.

With regard to the Southport situation that so exists, I am old enough to remember the northern extension of the 3rd rail service from there that plied its trade between Southport and Crossens.

Really? I was under the impression that it would take over the Watford DC line, curtailing the Overground at Queens Park, with services joining the NNL near Euston.
