Has there ever been a 3rd rail electric `road` into the Southampton freight yard - where wagons could be shunted onto an electric loco?

The only electric locos (ignoring 20001 which apparently once worked a Royal train to the area) were electro-diesels, so there would have been no need.

July 1964 - Chichester - E5006
SR class 71 E5006 leaving Chichester with the 21.10 freight to Three Bridges. A SR class 12 diesel shunter can also be seen. It was only possible to photograph this train in the few weeks of high summer - on 400ASA roll film, no digital, no flash!

Im not sure thats the case, as im finding photos of Class 71 working freight on coast way west

Chichester is not Southampton, and was electrified thirty years earlier. The electrodiesels had been around for several years before the 3rd rail finally got to Southampton in 1967, and indeed the class 74s were converted specifically for that line.July 1964 - Chichester - E5006

As far as i am aware the only sidi9ngs fitted with 750V overhead to accomodate the 70s and 71s were on the South Eastern Division.
