Today I saw 390013 at Crewe working with its front pantograph instead of the usual rear pantograph. I have also seen 390013 numerous times over the last year and it has always been working with it's front pantograph. Does anyone know what is wrong with it?
Thanks.

Thus may seem simplistic, but the from pantograph is the rear pantograph whe the set is running in the opposite direction......

Yeah but if it's doing that when other trains aren't...

They all used to run with the front pan up not that long ago. Perhaps 390013 has something fitted that requires it to still work with the front pan up. OHLE monitoring for instance, such as a CCTV Camera?

Have you seen it doing so in both directions - that is, is it always the front pantograph in the direction of travel or always the pantograph at the south end (or the north end)? If it is always a specific pantograph then the presence of some sort of monitoring equipment seems a good possibility. Otherwise the only thing I can think of might be some experiment to see if the pantograph performs differently when running in the opposite direction from usual.

Please note this is speculation on my part, I have no idea whether any such equipment is actually fitted!
