On the 06:35 Manchester-London, 390011 has 1st at the country end. Anbody know why, and where it could have been turned?

Can be turned by leaving Birmingham New Street the wrong direction or around Edinburgh.

I can't think of a way at Edinburgh, but perhaps Carstairs triangle?
I'm quite sure there's also a way of turning sets near Polmadie, Glasgow.

It was probably Polmadie I was thinking of

You could also turn a Pendo using the triangle at Carstairs (unlikely) or around Motherwell. I remember once arriving at Motherwell heading south behind a northbound 87 then forward to Glasgow around the Hamilton Circle which was a bit strange. With a Pendo you could easily reverse at Motherwell on the above diversion and turn the set in the process.

As said above there are a few places where an electric train can get turned deliberately on the west Coast.

In the case of 390011, where it ended up the wrong way round, it must have been one of the locations where its the end result of a forced abnormal move. My vote for yesterday (Friday 15/11/2013) would be at Birmingham as there was congestion between New Street and Duddeston. So a Pendolino from Euston might well have arrived at New Street but then gone back to Euston by contiuning forward towards Wolverhampton turned North at Soho then turned East through Aston and then down the (normally) freight only line towards Coventry.

It will probably get turned back to the right way round at one of the other locations. Choose whichever is nearest to the end of its diagram today.

There is a thread on the disruption here

I believe they use the triangle from Finsbury Park to the North London Line to turn 225s. Pendolinos could theoretically reach this via Primrose Hill but I'm not sure if they are cleared to do so. Otherwise as suggested, Soho Curve, Carstairs triangle, or several options around Glasgow.

Did Airdrie-Bathgate electrification include the curve from Slateford round to Haymarket West? If so then there would be an electrified triangle here too.

Could always do Euston - Wembley Yard - (then along the City line) - Gospel Oak - Kensington Olympia - (then via the line Southern trains use) - Wembley Yard - Euston? [/speculation]

There isn't a curve from Slateford to Haymarket West.

Haymarket West Jcn. / Haymarket Central Jcn. / Gorgie Jcn. forms a triangle, but only one side is electrified.

there are some fanciful suggestion on here

I think it likely ( without checking) the stock was turned in Birmingham because of disruption.

I believe they use the triangle from Finsbury Park to the North London Line to turn 225s.

Are these moves normally ECS?

I believe that EC normally turn sets around at Newcastle using the High Level Bridge.

Manchester airport branch line, could be long enough for the job?

No, even a 9 car doesn't fit so they can't be turned there. Chat moss will be able to be used from next year to help turn a pendo in the north west.

Used to notice quite a few wrong way round the Monday after weekend diversions like the settle line although recently only voyagers have been used

I would have thought the Birmingham area would be the bang on obvious place it happened.
