Random question for those of you who know about Pendos..

On 390s there is a little shoe-type thing protruding from the side of one of the bogies on roughly the central carriage.

Looks a bit like a 3rd rail shoe. what is it? Something to do with the tilting?

Don't know anything about 390s specifically but is it an APC magnet for neutral sections as found under the pantograph on all AC electrics? Like a largish metal cylinder?

I think the OP meant on the bogie, like a third-rail collector shoe, and not on a pantograph coach.

I agree with A-driver, sounds like the APC receiver. The APC receiver is on the bogie.
