390 054 (11-car Pendolino)

I definately remember Pendo54 making it down to Euston sometime within the last month or two. I've a feeling it may have been the day when the WCML was shut north of Carlisle, because of a pretty bad OHLE problem?

I can't find any reference to the move at the moment though.

That would be 390004 and not 390054. Think 004 Alstom Pendolino was on Euston - Manchester's today

390 054 did do a run to Euston according to another post in another thread (that I cannot find to hand at the moment). I was interested to see what platform it sat at during its time there.

So, an 11 pendo is 253m long, so would fit in any platform except, 9, 10, 17A or 18.

I wouldn't expect implementing 11 car diagrams on over half their services if the platforming was restricted to that of the sleepers...

Remember in the days of BR an 11 coach train could have been seen as short and small...

Out of interest, is the length of each coach stated on the Class 390 Wikipedia article incorrect when it states that each coach is 24.1m long (which would make a 9 car 390 216.9m and the 11 car 390 265.1m) or are the driving coaches shorter?

The combined volume states the lengths as 24.80m and 23.90m, but doesn't specify which is which - though I would assume the driving cars are the marginally shorter ones?

Alstom material gives 23.05m for each driving car, and 23.90m for all the others.

As Peter Mugridge states, the Platform 5 book gives the lengths as 24.8m for the driving cars and 23.9m for the intermediate vehicles. This makes sense as the added length of the nose cone accounts for the additional length of the driving cars (Assuming, not necessarily correctly, that both driving and intermediate vehicles have the same length between bogie centres). Though I’d be more willing to support figures from Alstom material admittedly.

Not only that, but before the mid to late eighties when West Coast train formations became more fixed, and before the arrival of the DVTs, West Coast train formations could often be rather lengthy affairs, although admittedly the mark 2 and mark 1 rakes that appeared in such train lengths used shorter vehicles than the later mark 3s and, of course, Pendolinos: An eleven carriage mark 2 formation is little longer than a nine carriage mark 3 rake, even without a DVT or BG van in the consist of the latter.

I know many complain about these trains about claustrphobic space etc but I have never been of that view (although I do take the point as I'm not saying they're the same as a mark 3 or 4 for that matter). I just love the look of these trains though. If any new set of IC's followed suit in terms of aesthetics we'd have a great looking set of conventional rail IC's. Why there isn't a standard that says all Intercity's should be 10 coaches minimum is beyond me instead of all the IEP nonsense of 5 coach trains as is the case too with XC.

Surely if we just adopted a simple standard like that the IC capacity problems would be almost solved?! This would mean any new orders have a standard and the number of coaches will always be the same and you have a happier public!

I was talking to a chap at Rugby the other morning and he mentioned that every site he went on gave different lengths for coaches, he also said that there were no lengths shown on data panels.

His solution was to measure them himself (one x driving and one x trailer) by putting stickers on the platform at their ends and then using a tape measure.

Not seen him since so do not know what results he came up with (he did get permission from the station staff to do this).

Anyone know what services the new (currently) 9 coach Pendolino that is operating Birmingham NS to Glasgow services operates? For a larger train will there be more advanced tickets available or do they have the same quota for them all no matter whether it is a Pendo or Voyager?

There isn't a new Pendolino operating as a 9 car set yet. It is still 11 cars and under test.

As above, it is on tests
It has been to Glasgow once, but seems to have been to Edinburgh a few times
There will be no change to advance ticket allocations

Heads up that 390054 is now running around as a 9 car set. Passed through (and briefly stopped at) Stafford Platform 5 this afternoon at about 12:20.

No longer says 11 car Pendolino on it, just New Pendolino and now has the stripes applied to the doors

P.S. I didn't actually count the coaches as I was pre-ooccupied being shocked by seeing it, wondering why it had stopped in a random place in platform 5 and taking pictures, but there were another three or four people with me who said it was 9 coaches (and the length seemed to suggest it too)

If it is only 9 coaches now does anybody know where the other 2 coaches will be residing, I'm guessing Edge Hill where this unit has been or is still based but could be proved wrong
