It will normally be a 3 car Class 380, as signs are not going to be installed on the Cathcart Circle platforms
However two SDO and PIS runs are taking place next week just in case either a 4, 6, 7, or 8 car set does accidently end up used instead

As boring as it may be, but you would be able to see at least two such units per day on the Cathcart Circle

Note :
It is STRICTLY Cathcart Circle ONLY
Class 380 units will NOT be permitted on Neilston or Newton services

Ah thats kinda disappointing , would rather see them on the Neilston OR Newton . Still better than nothing .

Apparently there's been an issue with one of the units and it, along with a sister I believe, has been moved to Carlisle Kingmoor for some reason. Can anyone elaborate on this?

As I understand it, there was a problem with a brake not releasing?
380105 and 380108 suffered a brake problem on Thursday 23 September and was moved to Kingmoor early on Friday 24 September, after blocking the southbound WCML at Gretna
Inspection showed that 380108 had lost a section of roof from the PTOSL vehicle
92042 moved 380105 back to Polmadie

Prior to this 380105 was paired with 380106

380105 and 380106 have now been accepted for passenger use
The next tests commence tonight
It had been hoped to use two different units; 380107 and 380109

380105+108 failed apparantly with total electrical loss at Mossband Junction around 01:00 on 24 September. Staff on board were unable to rectify the fault and there was little technical information available to help with arranging a plan. Around 04:00 6X77 hauled by a class 92 was sent to assist in rear to move the units unbraked to Quintinshill loop at walking pace, crew on the unit manning the parking brakes. They arrived just before 05:00. The next night DRS sent 2x66s to Quintinshill to top 'n' tail the units to Kingmoor to 5mph where they were secured by Siemens on an unwired road. On the night of the failure an OLE fault was reported at Ecclefechan, and a roof panel from one of the 380s was discovered lineside. As a result of this all class 380 testing has been banned until further notice but transit moves for delivery are still permitted.

Not according to the Transport Scotland Class 380 Project Manager
He has confirmed for me that the cause of this fault had been traced on Friday and testing continues
There was never any "ban" on the units
However had the cause not been found by 19:00 today then todays run would have been cancelled (as it is not essential)

I can only go by the reports I read from Network Rail which used the word 'banned'.

After reading the "rumours" and subsequent reports from Friday, I sent an email to [person]
I was surprised to get a response on Saturday morning that an interim report had been submitted and that Network Rail would permit access to the two Class 380 units already approved for passenger use

A further udpate this morning confirming that the planned tests would continue, however none of the other Class 380s are to be used by verbal agreement, but there is no official "ban" with a decision being made by 19:00 today

As above, it had been hoped to use two different Class 380 tonight, but if Network Rail are not happy then the test will proceed with the "usual" two Class 380

Just to elaborate on the "failure" - the roof cover was actually part of the roof-mounted air-conditioning unit. Just in case anyone thought the roof structure of the body-shell was falling to bits!!

Why is it considered necessary for these trains to carry an ironing board around on the front end?

Transport Scotland thought they "looked nicer"
One criticism on the previous Class 318 units when introduced on the Ayr route was they were "ugly"
One other factor is that the sloped front should allow a (very small) amount of increased acceleration due to the many station stops, plus utilising the 90mph line speed
The only other time these units will be able to use their 100mph capability is between Glasgow and North Berwick

Anyone know if there will be a 380 run tonight? Obviously there wasn't last week, but there was two weeks ago.

Scottish Media today seems to have picked up on the delay in commisioning, most papers carrying the story that for the last two weeks and until the problems (thought to be software) are fixed they wont be accepting any new trains from Siemens. Their also looking into temporarily hiring stock to serve the cascade that should have happened with their introduction.

Some holes in this though...
No mention of the structural fault during testing; only a software fault
It was known there was a brake issue on the final test, but this had already been dealt with by Siemens

Temporarily hiring in stock presents its own issues; route acceptance and driver training
There are however some possibilities, including operating spare EMUs on the Cathcart route (releasing the Class 314 to Ayrline) or to use Class 156 units on a revised Glasgow - Ayr timetable

Ironically, 308105 and 380106 are still showing as accepted for passenger use, even after all this hoo-haa
However, I suspect this was revoked subject to a basic retesting of the replacement software (which should have been completed last night)
It looks as if the next two could be accepted later next week, with their run to Carstairs
The other runs for SDO cannot take place now
However, a single four Class 380 could still operate between Glasgow - Ayr in a fortnight
For that reason they may just dump it and go straight to the December cascade (subject to all 22 units being approved by the first week of December)

Those poor Ayr commuters
Something is better than nothing!
They could turn round and post notices "Sorry no trains as the new trains have not arrived"

Ironic, it is always the Ayrline that suffers
It got all the "second hand" DMUs in the mid 1980s

Can I suggest a thread that is solely for 380 deliveries. Then its easier to see if there is any new information on expected deliveries.

By the way 380101 and 380111 came through together on Thursday 7/11/10 (incase you did not know that yet Bittern).

It seems that once a 380 has made it through the tunnel in the night/morning it is guaranteed to leave Dollands Moor (usuallly 13:15) and run that day through to Polmadie (arriving the following morning). So that is the earliest warning anyone gets.

Can I suggest the following link http://www.scot-rail.co.uk/page/Class+380+Formations . This shows the formations and Expected delivery times in Scotland. Have to say the deliveries quite often slip later (101&111 four times I think) but it gives an indication of what might happen. I dont think a delivery has run earlier than they predicted. This site also gives info on the routes the 380s are to be used on.

I have now received and read the latest update from the Class 380 Project Manager at Transport Scotland

The planned phased introduction has now been postponed indefinitely, which was due to commence on Monday 18 October
A provisional new date of Monday 08 November has now been set
This will leave the Ayrshire route short of two EMUs until this introduction
However, in the interim period First ScotRail have advised that there is sufficient fleet capacity to cope at this time with these diagrams being covered by two other units of similar specification from within the existing fleet

Should there be insufficient units accepted into service by Friday 19 November then a further update will be provided
From Monday 13 December a minimum of ninteen Class 380 units are required to be in service, to which the train supplier are still confident of meeting this requirement

Indications are that the next delivery leaves Dollands Moor tomorrow (14 Sept 2010) probably 380112 and 380104. I suppose in the normal 7X80 path. So like "rail-britain" says unlikely to be any delay in introduction of 13 December 2010 plans.

I agree that there will be enough trains available, the question now is that FSR may not have enough drivers fully trained, and having read the response there is no mention and no direct response to that question I raised
I suspect they are going to wait until the latest tests are completed so that full driver training can commence, then they will know how far behind they really are (from what I can work out it is now six weeks)

Equally, some Class 380s may be in passenger use from 13 December, but it is not likely to be the full fleet as many drivers will still not have been trained

As an aside, two other questions were answered (by FSR)
Why are the Class 380 units being introduced on the Cathcart route?
Although this question was previously asked, recent tests have included runs on the Neilston route (which is not yet included on the approved routes listing), is this route to be included with services?

The Class 380 units will allow a direct capacity improvement on the Gourock route
As such the four car Class 380 used should be on the Neilston route, thus releasing the six car Class 314 to be used on the Gourock route

Due to an oversight the Neilston route was not included, it was already known there would be cost implications for introducing units on the Newton (via Kings Park) route, and this will be added at a later date (along with other routes)
Network Rail will commence route improvements along the Neilston route for these units once the current improvements have been completed
In the interim period the Class 380 will only operate on the Cathcart Circle
