Sorry guys but your wrong. Currently Bombardier and Siemens are the only two bidders left currently for the new 'NXEMU' for Thameslink.

They are coming in two batches with the first still on. The second batch which basically is to allow the extra routesto be run is on hold.

Then again the first train isn't due till mid 2012 and is expected to carry its first passengers in mid 2014 so there is still plenty of time for orders to be places as well as the whole thing to change.

Oops, you won't be too happy with the current two bidders then!

I'm lost :? They're still bidding but they are being built I'm lost?

Siemens bidded for the TL stock, but were ruled out, as was Alstom. Forgot about Crossrail :)

As has already been pointed out it is Siemens vs Bombardier in the Thameslink order.

It was Alstom who were ruled out

aAnd Hitachi pulled out of their own accord

A useful update from Transport Scotland :

From the Rolling Stock Project Manager, Transport Scotland :

The new trains have been fully tested in Germany at Siemens test facility in
Wegberg. Commissioning “shake-down” runs will take place on West Coast Main line
to Carlisle and are due to commence w/c 20th September. Ride comparator test between
class 380 and class 334 unit is also scheduled for that week along with SDO/PIS
proving runs around all planned class 380 routes in Ayrshire, Inverclyde and
Cathcart Circle.

The first passenger service is planned from 18th October on Glasgow Central to Ayr
route. A steady infiltration of class 380s, replacing existing class 334 units, will
take place from that point.

There is a planned Ministerial launch event at Glasgow Central on 25th October to
mark the launch of class 380 services and a similar event at Shields Depot on 15th
November to mark the opening of the new train care facility.

There are no plans for public display of the new units as all are required for
passenger services on completion of their final commissioning

I heard the first pax run will be an evening peak train to Ayr or somewhere thats is normally a 6 car 334 and will be 8 car 380 :)

Thought Platforms were only going to be lengthened to take 7 car units as in 1x4 - 1x3?

Why is a ride comparator test between two different units necessary?
Any excuse to test the Class 380s
There was a similar test with the Class 334 (and 318) when they were introduced

On week 1 (expected to be 14 or 15 September), using Class 334
On week 2 (expected to be 21 September), using Class 380

This then allows comparison of ride quality in all coaches over the same route on the same conditions

22:02 Glasgow - Gourock
22:44 Gourock - Glasgow
23:47 Glasgow - Gourock
00:30 Gourock - Glasgow
01:55 Glasgow - Ayr
02:55 Ayr - Glasgow
03:46 Glasgow - Ayr
04:30 Ayr - Glasgow

Thanks, i see what you mean. Will there be staff on board to feedback the ride quality or will it be from the driver alone?

Like the look, there's something about them i just love.

How big is the order and is there scope for more? although as mentioned DMU's are in need not EMU's

Loads of staff are expected to be on board as well as monitoring equipment in each vehicle

This is part one of three orders
There is cascade in December which releases 5 Class 158 units, currently in use on Edinburgh - Bathgate

With the next order, this releases 8 Class 170 units, currently in use on Glasgow QS - Edinburgh
These EMUs are likely to be of a similar design, 3 cars but with First Class
However, if the proposals proceed for a 125mph line speed then yet another new design will be required

The final order releases all the Glasgow South Class 156 units, which will be returned to RoSCo
It is expected these EMU will also be 4 cars

Any news on when and if the 2nd and 3rd order will be going ahead, never even heard of this.

all planned class 380 routes in Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Cathcart Circle.

Didn't realise they were for the Cathcart lines too - I thought only the Paisley routes?

Or is this just "they're being cleared to work the Cathcart routes in case, and we don't plan to use them on there" (in the way that Northern's 333s have permission to run Leeds - Doncaster - York - Newcastle (in case they need attention at Heaton)?

The 380s are not planned for Cathcart Circle routes. These duties will remain with the 314s, who will be backed up by some of the 320s when needed.

That was also the original information I had
However it appears Transport Scotland have since changed their requirements, with there now being at least two services operated by Class 380
There are issues with that (at present though) as the route does not have any 4, 7, 8, or S stop boards, so it would only be 3 or 6 car units

In the cascade three 3-car Class 380 units have always been unaccounted for...
http://www.scotrail.co.uk/content/train-cascade-plan-announced.html
There is no mention of what they would do, it was always assumed they were operational spares, but it appears when available they will operate on the Cathcart routes

Only 2? That's good. When I read your post on Scot-Rail, I thought that it was decided to retire the 314s for a second.

What gave you that idea?
Quite clear that Class 380 will not normally be operating on Cathcart routes, the original advisory I had from Transport Scotland stated that Class 380 units would not be used under any circumstances, they would not provide any funding for this
I've not mentioned Class 314 units for some time, as it has been well known they will remain on Cathcart duties until at least 2014

ah i guess it would be a 3 car one . i wonder how many will do this route
It will normally be a 3 car Class 380, as signs are not going to be installed on the Cathcart Circle platforms
However two SDO and PIS runs are taking place next week just in case either a 4, 6, 7, or 8 car set does accidently end up used instead

As boring as it may be, but you would be able to see at least two such units per day on the Cathcart Circle

Note :
It is STRICTLY Cathcart Circle ONLY
Class 380 units will NOT be permitted on Neilston or Newton services

Clearance issues?

Clearance issues?
No, as the Track Access Agreement now allows their use
TS initially did not want the Class 380 units on Cathcart routes
The compromise reached was that they would be used on Circle only
Personally, I think this is all a farce, swings and roundabouts with Class 314 on the Inverclyde
The principle is that in the event of a fleet failure then they interoperable and by having this every weekday ensures enough drivers keep their traction knowledge for that route

I thought that was the case, cheers!
