The first of 120 new trains and carriages for East Anglian rail routes have come off the production line.

The first wave of trains costing £155m will be in service by next May between Stansted Airport, Cambridge and London.

National Express East Anglia has also refurbished 68 carriages for the line from Norwich to London Liverpool Street through Suffolk and Essex.

Mark Phillips, from National Express East Anglia, said the new trains will be in service for the Olympic Games.

"This is tremendously important because visitors coming here for the games will want to get a really good impression of the UK and our transport network.

"This is an opportunity for us to showcase what we can do and we're delilghted that the trains will be in service for that."

According to the Cambridge News coverage, only 20 of the units will be for Stansted Express, and ten will be more-or-less dedicated to Cambridge services?

I though all 30 were for Stan Ex (with one or two peak Cambridge services to appease people)?

Well considering right now, SEX has 21 dedicated 317s, that sounds about right to me :)

As it is, some Stan Ex services run as four car though don't they? Sending the 379s to Cambridge just seems to be for good-will purposes/to keep a couple of MPs happy (and I say that as a Cambridge resident and user of the West Anglia route)

9 units neded for Stansteds to be 4 cars, 18 units for Stansteds to be 8 cars, 27 units for Stansteds to be 12 car. The units were ordered primarily to cater for growth to the latter and that hasn't happened yet, Stansteds will remain at 8 cars with a number of units used on Cambridge turns.

The MPs north of Stortford were certainly making their voices heard even before the Stansteds staying as 8s was confirmed...

Re 442s: guards van, e.p/auto brake, and ee motors, ability to be hauled by a locomotive in event of failure. Oh, and reliable (aside from southern mods) Much the same as a slam door then. The mark 3 carriage and plug doors being the main difference.

Dear God in heaven above!!!! I take it all back. Those units are going to be bulletproof.

Knowing this gentleman's reputation I'm surprised that 001 not only failed to "sit down" but that it didn't burst into flames or disintegrate into it's component pieces.

I see they have the bloody holes in the overhead luggage racks like the newer 377s. Not fun if you put a wet coat or umbrella up there...

Terrible design flaw.

Must be a reason for that though?

Interesting refurbished Southern 313s also have that style

I always thought the holes were to prevent puddles forming up there.

Do they have differences with 375, 376 or 377 ?

According to Railway gazette:

Although part of the Electrostar family, the Class 379 incorporates a number of technical changes from the original design developed in the late 1990s, making use of technologies which would be used on the Aventra next-generation Electrostar which Bombardier is proposing for the major Thameslink fleet renewal contract

More technical description stuff in their full article here:

Cab is almost identical to a 377, the DOO monitors are side by side instead of one on top of the other. Also of note, as per the DC only 377s the AC only 379s appear to be easily convertible to dual-voltage (well there is apace for the buttons in the cab, and this is one advantage of modern stocks!)

Thanks MCR247, it's back up now. I do have to say First Class looks really nice in these, no doubt someome will say that the seating is horrible. It's a bit like First Class on NXEA 170s if I remember rightly.
