No offence but if Southern is stretched its there doing. The deal to lend FCC th 377/2's is older than the Southern franchise.

The deal to lend was in the franchise but they are due to return in 2013 not 2018. Southern have taken a lot of old stock to cover this.

As for the Redhill 377/5, that will be 2W55 1610 Bedford - Brighton service. Note that under the new timetable this service goes back to being 319. All Redhill trains will be 319's in just over a weeks time.

Oh aren't we lucky - not.

The 319's are awful units off peak and just get worse in the peak, except the half dozen still with Southern interiors

What old stock have they taken over to replace the 377/5's?

Think you'll find the main use of the returned 377/5's will be train lengthing. The bring on of old stock (ie 313 was to release the 377/3 for 10 car suburban workings). If anything it now is going to be a case of Southern getting a lot more with 26x five car 377's as well as the 377/5 back a few years late. Add in the added stock from the Desiro City for Southern means they will be able to replace pretty much all of the old BR stock completely.

As for Redhill, it does get a half hearted service looking at the timetables. As someone who watches 377's pass every day and gets a 377 I know what I'd prefer to get.

Today: 211 & 212 in the cleaning shed at Selhurst getting their new livery. 211 was complete, 212 nearly there and just getting finishing touches. (Or was it the other way round?)

Sorry quick question - how many 377/2s are required to operate MKC-South Croydon services? Including spares... I ask this because obviously the /2s are the only thing in the Southern fleet that can run this service. Unless they plan on borrowing 350/1s or those 375s that randomly have pantographs that never get used?

I think only four, with maybe one or two spares. The rest just get allocated third-rail only workings. I saw one en-route to Southampton the other day!

I thought it was more than that, seeing as the end-to-end journey time is the best part of two hours and they spend 15 minutes sitting at the MK end. There's also talk of making it an 8-car service, maybe that's dependent on Southern's new order?

Definitely only four diagrams. Even during the offpeak when they run to/from South Croydon the end to end time is less than two hours. The turn round at South Croydon is only 6minutes. Here's an extract from a current diagram:

MKC 08:03 08:13 2O23
SCY 10:01 10:07 2M33
MKC 12:01 12:13 2O39
SCY 14:01 14:07 2M41
MKC 16:01 16:13 2O55

Theoretically they do have enough 377/2s to double up the MK service and still provide three to FCC, and have four left over for maintenance and a couple of DC turns, as they have 15 units.

If the necessary 8 car platforms suddenly got built, the problem would be SN's lack of overall unit numbers, not a specific lack of dual voltage stock.

There was a trial run of a 12 car 377/5 today on 0940 Bedford - Brighton and 1240 Brighton - Bedford using 377505 + 377510 + 377519. Complete fiasco !

On the southbound run the driver only found out the platform extentions at Farringdon were still a designated building site, so about 10 minutes were lost while the selective door opening was activated and people in the front 4 coaches were given time to walk through the train to alight. The northbound run was even more chaotic, already 30 min late arriving at Farringdon there was a lengthy stop as again people in the rear 4 coaches wishing to alight had to walk through the train. Then there was another farce at St Pancras as the doors in the rear 4 wouldn't open. Departure from St Pancras was about 45 min late.

No, it was always dependant on the 377/5 coming back to Southern and somehow getting the funding to extend the platforms on the WLL to 8 cars.

Just lock the back four out at those stations and advertise it as front four only for them?

How did that happen? Surely they would have done an ECS run to check all the new platforms and identified that as a problem?

Did the driver need to come out of the cab, or was there a second staff member on board who could operate the door panel?

There was an ECS that was successful and it was planned that the driver couldn't use all the 12 car platform.

Problem southbound at Farringdon and northbound through the core was the SDO being over sensitive and not releasing all the doors correctly.

In addition to all the other farces already mentioned here, when the northbound run arrived at Blackfriars the driver (who was accompanied by a traincrew manager in the cab at the time) stopped at the 'S' car stop marker, as there still isn't a 12 car stop marker, resulting in the rear 3 coaches being off the platform.

Network Rail hasn't signed off the 12 car platforms until the weekend hence there is not 12 car position yet.

Farce is one word!
