Regarding the small number with ironing boards in all coaches and 2 plus 2 at the small compartments at carriage end

They are devoid of luggage stacks other than the cupboards and the high density seating makes me wonder if this batch were designed for metro only ? Or is the seating capacity actually much the same as the others ?

There is a batch of /1's that were meant for Metro from the outset and allocated to Selhurst from the off.

The OP is referring to 377120-377139 which were ordered by Connex.

I don't think there is any sense that they were ordered for Metro work. They started on Brighton work, prior to the next batch being used to convert the Arun Valley services to 377 operation.

The first 377/4s did Metro work on introduction. Later, once the whole fleet was delivered they were swapped for 377120-377155 which solely did Metro work for a period. For some years, the units have been common user across the network.
