An extreme long shot. The above worked over the Central Wales variously during the 1970's being one of those fitted with bonnet mounted headlights. I believe it was so involved on Saturday 5th March 1977, but unable to identify trains concerned?

TIA

RCTS diesel dilemmas is trying to identify the locos that carried the headlights for use on the Central Wales Line see here:

Locomotive hauled trains using the Central Wales line between Craven Arms and Pantyffynnon in the late 1960's and 1970's utilised Class 37 locomotives fitted with headlamps. These headlamps were mounted between the nose end lamp brackets. What doesn't appear clear from what has been published is precisely which locomotives were so fitted and when. Thus, the aim of this dilemma is to try and establish which locomotives were so fitted and when. The requirement ceased by early 1980 when portable headlamps started to be used instead.

5 March 1977 was a Wales v England 5 Nations rugby international so may have been related to that.

Thanks both;

On 21st August 1976 I travelled on the 14.50 Swansea-Shrewsbury behind it as far as Ammanford
Strangely enough, trying to make sense of my jumbled notes, that was the train that made most sense to me as well, albeit took it through to Shrewsbury.

That's interesting, as the day started at Reading with a run to Cardiff behind 47145, possibly a rugby relief, although I have no memory of fellow passengers, be they rugby supporters or not!

Through the 70s and 80s the Cardiff rugby plan was very roughly
- London commuter sets ECS to Wales Friday PM to work:
- Milford - Swanseas extended to Cardiff plus reliefs. (ECS to Newport for reliefs back to Cardiff)
- Release DMUs from the west to strengthen valleys.
Plus reliefs from London and North Wales.

Central Wales loco hauled might have been a local move to release a DMU in the 70s? It became a planned move for a couple of years at the start of the 90s when John Davis got hold of a 37/4 + 3 wanting a DMU released. Only Central Wales was possible.

Thanks again.

One further conundrum which I have been unable to solve (as yet).

No exact date this time, other than a Saturday in the summer months of 1980 (so no pressure you fine amateur detectives :lol: ), so could be last days of the 1979 GBTT or more likely in to the 1980 GBTT.

Something in back of my distant memory is saying the train was a Fishguard Harbour service, starting Paddington and calling at Reading. So am guessing likely 0926/27 ex Paddington, also due to pick up only at Cardiff (11u49), or at a push the following 0938 Paddington to (Tenby - 1979 TT/Pembroke Dock - 1980 TT) which had an open stop at Cardiff 10 mins behind the Fishguard train.

On the occasion to which I refer it was worked by an unknown (not recoded) Brush 4, the said loco expiring West of Swindon, or just after passing Wootton Bassett Junction as best as I remember. How long we had to await a rescue I do not recall, but this did come in the form of 56037, which took the train forward to Cardiff, where 'one' alighted.

Presume both locos were detached (the 56 is noted as being on Canton during those few days in the RCTS Observer mags), but have no idea if the train went forward, or was terminted?

Here is the formation just after arrival at Cardiff. Thanks again if anyone can shed any light?

An update ref my original post #1 about 37181 (above). Others are also looking in to this as a favour to me (so thank you), but I am now as certain as I can be, that on the date concerned (5 March 77) this was a railtour originating/ending Paddington, possibly one of the LNER society trips that I and others used back then, but for which there seems very few records or details have survived.

SixBellsJunction / Railgenarchive / RCTS Railway Observers for March, April and May of that year, are unable to assist, although one observation on the Railgen site* did confirm my thoughts about the Railtour theory, as per below.

As such if any of the following rings any bells with anyone, please feel free to let us know, thanks;

The primary destination on 5-3-77 was Barry scrapyard for a dose of redundant steam (it was my first visit so many cops, especially non SR types, the latter I may well have seen some of in the 1965-67 period but the old man didn't make notes at the time, lol !)

Given the destination, it seems odd (if I were on a service train) that at Reading I observed the 08.15 Paddington-Cardiff (Reading 08.49) come and go with 47.508* (Railgenarchive), and then remained at Reading to observe and note a further 2 x 3 car DMMU's, 1 x cl. 31, 2 x cl. 50 and 2 x HST's, before noting 47.145 with a suffix of 'hauled by'. Hence my Railtour theory.

It is my belief this tour with 47.145, headed direct to Cardiff and Barry Island, where all decamped for a wander around Dai Woodhams yard. My own photo's confirm the presence of quite a few people in the yard such as myself.
This is where (I believe) 37.181 was attached to the rear of the train, and hauled us back towards Cardiff, turning left via Ninian Park and Bridgend**, then leaving the main line and running via Jersey Marine North Jn (Swansea avoiding line in effect) and then turning North via Hendy Junction and Pontardulais towards Craven Arms and Shrewsbury.

At Shrewsbury it would appear that 47.448 replaced 37.181, and took us via Wolverhampton, New St, and (most likely?) Leamington Spa and back to Reading and Paddington?

A long shot again, but if this should ring any bells, particularly with those who (like me) obviously had an interest in seeing the steam in Barry scrapyard, then any comments welcome!

Thanks

** Edited: other notes I made at this point on the day, suggest the train I was on, went around the back of Canton depot, as opposed to running direct from Barry to Bridgend.

I have found this for you. It is in the Coming Events list in Railway Magazine February 1977.

Mar 5 Sat LNER Society "Central Walesman" Watford Jn, Harrow and W, Wembley C. Kensington O, Ealing B. Slough, Reading then via Severn Tunnel to Cardiff (Barry Scrapyard or other optional coach trips) return via Vale of Glamorgan, Swansea District and Central Wales lines, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Birmingham and Oxford to Watford Jn.
